I've been tasked by our IT Director to "spend free time developing a better understanding of the full scope of knowledge management and to put some thought into what might make sense for us to expand to the next level or create a long-term plan. This is an attempt to define the field of Knowledge Management, describe the possible benefits of applying Knowledge Management to the work processes of attorneys at Sherman & Howard, list probable next steps to expand acceptance of using Knowledge Management, and to create an outline of a long-range plan for managing and utilizing Knowledge Management at Sherman & Howard. There is a huge need to capture and reuse the 'Tacit' or Implicit knowledge of our experienced members and leverage those resources for new incoming associates. Interviewing older or outgoing members affords the opportunity to record some of this very important information and to pass it on aspart of the firm's assets. KM can also be extended to many other 'knowledge silos', repositories of useful information, unknown or hidden from the majority of the firm. Calendars and Contacts lists hidden in Outlook, is just one of many such repositories.The list of benefits that a Knowledge Management program can bring to Sherman & Howard is quite basic. A KM program will save time and therefore money, thus serving our clients well. Reusing a standard document format, regardless of the practice, is one of the keys to a successful KM program. After almost 4 years of contract work at the BLM, I finally found a permanent job at Sherman & Howard law firm in Denver. I am doing almost the same work I was doing when I was laid-off from HRO in May 2011. It's good to be back in the Library business and environment! I am working with 2 great Librarians, Margi Heinen and Timothy Fritz.4/22/2015 UPDATE!Sherman & Howard has contracted with HandShake Software to develop a SharePoint 2013 Intranet Portal. I am on the Intranet Design team and am the only person with prior SharePoint experience. However, a HandShake SharePoint portal is an entirely different beast. Now onto learning a new software platform :)

My Promotion to 'Knowledge Management Specialist' means I am responsible for the firm's Intranet. I now handle all aspects of this SharePoint 2013 website; Subsites, Lists and Libraries, Page creation, etc. I'm basically, a MS SharePoint Site Collection Administrator. I still process all the Library invoices, copy-catalog all new material, file all Treatise updates, check-in and route Serials.

I can now add SharePoint Designer 2010/2013 Workflows and InfoPath Designer 2013 to my Skill Set.These are 2 powerful applications that integrate with SharePoint. Forms and workflows, just the solutions a large law firm requires!I am still hard at work at Sherman & Howard LLC. This is such a great place to work!. I am still working in the Library and have advanced the technology utilized to produce greater savings and smoother functions. Our Intranet is evolving into a great piece of work that many find indispensable. HandShake software is the layer that sits between SharePoint and the Website. This is a powerful piece of software, but extremely difficult to learn and master. I've come a long way, but still manage to break stuff ;)
