I have volunteered to be either the Head or Assistant Coach of nearly 40 kids' sports teams. I have coached football, basketball, baseball, soccer, t-ball & softball for hundreds of kids and families. My goal initially was to make sure that the coaches that my kids played for were taking good care of the team, treating them right, and shared similar values to mine. I've learned from some fantastic coaches over the years and have been blessed to be able to "borrow" from many of them. I've grown from the Asst. Coach to the Head Coach now and put a lot of time into making sure that I teach life lessons to the leaders of tomorrow. I want to help the kids become better players in their respective sports, but I am really more concerned that they become better people as a result of their interaction with our team. With this goal in mind, I interview all of our assistant coaches to make sure that we share common values before giving them the responsibility and privilege of coaching the kids. I enjoy the relationships that I build with families and the ability to help kids through troubling times. We want to win on our teams as I believe that winning is something that you need to learn to do in life. While we've enjoyed success between the lines including 2 consecutive Super Bowls in football, I am most proud of the relationships we've built and the kids that we've helped along the way. My newest initiative is the formation of mentor groups of coaches and kids within our teams. We've got fantastic, successful, caring coaches who care about the kids and through the mentor groups they make it clear to the athletes that the coach isn't just there to help with sports, but can be a resource for life's challenges as well. I try to apply business, spiritual and sports lessons into our teams and am always open to hearing ideas on how we can do this more effectively.
