Software Intern
GridLAB-D is an electrical grid simulation tool that takes in an electrical grid network description representing the interconnected parts of the electrical grid and solves for the energy flow of the whole network. I use this technology to build software for tariff design and ICA analysis. Tariff Design - Electrical tariffs are extremely difficult to estimate as rates differ by utility company, region, month, time of day, day of the week, and tier of usage. Tariff design aims to build upon the existing GridLAB-D simulation software to also generate tariffs and other useful information organized in a csv file as well as visualizations. This implementation is also integrated into the user interface OpenFido which pipelines the uploaded inputs into downloadable outputs through a shell script entry point. Ica Analysis - In California, Investor Owned Utilities (IOUs) are required to complete system-wide integration capacity analysis (ICA) to determine the maximum node level hosting capacity for a circuit to remain within key power system criteria. The goal of ICA analysis is to quantify the potential DER generation that can interconnect without violating distribution system constraints. See links for more info.
Sjsu Java Lab Instructor
Each semester, I led an almost 3 hour lab section of 30 college students split into groups, lecturing on object-oriented concepts, reviewing quizzes and exams, and assessing the overall progression and understanding of students with weekly reports and exit interviews. During lab, I would attend to each individual student, answering questions as needed and taking note of their progress. At the end of the last semester, 100% of students "agreed" that the lab instructor was well prepared, was sensitive to each student’s comprehension level, and explained the material clearly.
Ca Fellowship Teacher
I worked with eleven other coworkers to develop computer science lesson plans including creative and engaging games, power points slides, and Scratch projects. These lessons were then taught to underserved students ages eight to eleven in the Campbell Union School District every Sunday (online) for an hour, increasing minority student interests in computer science by 30%. We also designed and implemented a social media campaign backed by journal research to provide fitness resources for students during COVID-19.
Summer Intern
GridLAB-D is an electrical grid simulation tool that takes in an electrical grid network description representing the interconnected parts of the electrical grid and solves for the energy flow of the whole network. During this full-time internship, I conducted output validation on the utility pole aspect of the grid simulation. Utility poles are subject to many forces that can result in a failure of the pole itself such as wind speed, wire sag, wire tension, and pole angle. Using common utility pole measurements, I identified 3 bugs which caused unexpected failures and narrowed down the possible errors to critical wind speed, pole stress, and pole moment by exploring the source code. Consequently, these bugs were easily noted and fixed within the day. I also learned Python along with the pandas library to transform SpidaCalc data, commonly used by stakeholders to model utility poles, to a format readable by GridLAB-D while using Jupyter Notebook for documentation. Here is the code: https://github.com/arras-energy/gridlabd-template/tree/add-resilience-template/US/CA/SLAC/anticipation/pole_dataThese experiences were then presented to fifty other interns and mentors in a ten minute presentation.
Cyber Spartans Mentor
Taught basics of network security to students at Lynhaven Elementary School, Campbell every Tuesday and Thursday for two hours. Mentored three students, ensuring understanding of four projects in Scratch. Guided their thought process as they strive to achieve results. Surveys indicated an increase in interest in computer science and a more concrete understanding of network security after the program. Improved my communication and presentation skills.
