Johnson Mayamba has more than a decade of experience as both a reporter and an editor. He has worked for several media houses but mostly the Nation Media Group in Uganda, East Africa. He is also a seasoned media trainer and mentor with the Journalists for Human Rights, an international NGO that builds the capacity of journalists in human rights reporting. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Mass Communication from Uganda Christian University, and a Master's in Human Rights and Democratisation in Africa (HRDA) from the Centre for Human Rights, Faculty of Law, University of Pretoria in South Africa.Johnson was the Hubert H. Humphrey Fellow in the 2021-2022 cohort at the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication, Arizona State University in the US; the 2023-2024 Chevening Africa Media Freedom Fellow at the University of Westminster in the UK; and 2023 Universal Rights Group Media Fellow at the UN Human Rights Council in Switzerland.In 2014, he was elected the National Vice Chairman of the Human Rights Network for Journalists - Uganda for a three-year term. Johnson used this leadership opportunity to advocate and lobby for freedom of expression, opinion and speech; access to information; and media freedom in Uganda. He has also held different leadership roles in various capacities and organisations, mainly focusing on human rights promotion and protection.He is a well-grounded journalist, communications strategist, and fervid human rights defender.
