Following ten years’ service in the Royal Australian Navy, I shifted careers and became a Registered Nurse studying at the Royal Melbourne Hospital as a Registered Nurse in 1993. Entering the Aged Care sector as a personal care worker and quickly working my way to Clinical Manager and then Residential Manager I discovered a passion for finding new ways to better the care and services for the elderly, relatives and employees.With a talent for identifying weaknesses in systems and processes and a natural curiosity to pursue alternative solutions, innovation and continuous improvement led me to the role of Quality. Becoming a Quality Manager was realised in 2008 after ten years of experience transitioning from a personal care worker through to Residential Manager in the capacity of a Registered Nurse.Since 2008 I feel that I have made a significant difference to the Aged Care sector My career in Aged Care has been an incredibly rewarding one.I have been fortunate to work for visionary organisations who firmly believe in the principles of continuous improvement and the courage to explore innovation even if it is 'left of field'. Bright light therapy Ageing Abroad are prime examples of this.Of note is the development, training and implementation of MyHUB and Jian Boa (a ground-up clinical care platform specific to the Chinese Aged Care sector) to the Sunjin Executive and staff of Fragrant Hills Gardens in Beijing providing a great insight of the Chinese culture and health care, especially the aged.Activities achieving three Better Practice Awards and writing of a successful application in 2016 in the highly competitive ACAR round are highlights of my career.

Barry was directly involved in the employment of 98% of the staff now working at Parkville, using the Mercy Values of Compassion, Hospitality, Respect, Innovation, Stewardship and Teamwork as the main metric for determining the successful applicant. This has lead to a retention rate that is extremely healthy. Barry has successfully brought together the different cultures of staff and the Aged with his Ageing Abroad Initiative, bringing the world of Aged Care to the doorsteps of Parkville. Since the commencement of this initiative, the Residents of Parkville have, through the staff, visited and presented a tote bag, which includes two slide sheets to the Aged in 28 countries in just over 12 months. -

As a recruiter I not only worked from St Kilda Rd Melbourne but visited many regional schools and learning institutions. Also there was a stint of Naval housing management and assisting with the relocation of naval families. The Navy is a great life.
