VLSH is a non-profit organization whose mission is to serve Hawaii’s low-income community through volunteer attorneys. Initial responsibilities as Staff Attorney included supervision of intake staff, coordination with volunteer attorneys and client relations. Promoted to Director of Legal Services within three months where responsibilities included the coordination and provision of legal services through our pool of volunteer attorneys, extensive education & outreach and providing direct services to low-income and moderate-income clients. Worked closely with the Executive Director to streamline internal processes and procedures to ensure customer satisfaction and delivery of quality services. Strengthened partnerships with local non-profits and the Judiciary to leverage available resources for low-income clients in need of legal assistance. Successfully applied for and received funding through city and state grant programs for additional services across the state.

September 2009 to September 2012: Worked in the Honolulu Housing Unit defending tenants from adverse actions and discrimination in public housing, Section 8 and private landlord-tenant cases. Required extensive knowledge of affordable housing programs and government regulations, ability to research relevant precedent and apply to the situation at hand, educate landlords and federally-funded housing staff on their legal responsibilities and manage the expectations of low-income clients with disabilities. September 2012 to September 2013: Supervising Attorney for the Fair Housing Enforcement Program. Responsibilities included administrative advocacy and litigation in both federal and state courts on civil rights and housing discrimination issues. As the recipient of the only FHIP grant in the State of Hawaii, required extensive outreach & education with partners, landlords and housing programs, coalition building and resource development and optimizing caseloads to ensure an effective use of limited resources such that cases had the maximum impact in the community and set long-term legal precedent for future clients.

Responsibilities included representing veterans in administrative appeals for VA benefits; assisting the Executive Director in community outreach, coalition building, fundraising and grant writing; supporting the Senior Staff Attorney on class action litigation; and legislative advocacy on behalf of low-income families in Hawaii.

Clinical program which allows students to represent clients in housing and consumer protection cases under the supervision of an attorney. Responsibilities included interviewing and counseling clients, preparing pleadings, discovery, and memoranda, preparing and arguing motions, and conducting negotiations, administrative hearings, and trials on behalf of low-income clients.

Worked closely with the Legal Director and Staff Attorney to research relevant precedent, write legal memoranda, conduct community outreach and education, and interview potential clients with regards to the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act, which led to Kaleuati v. Tonda, Civ. No. 07-504, and helped to secure appropriate transportation services and access to education for homeless children. Also assisted with intake for civil cases and inmate requests, preparing testimony for administrative hearings, and research on civil liberties issues.

Shadowed Judge R. Mark Browning of the Family Court, observed round-table discussions regarding the participants of JDC, and learned about a proactive rather than reactive approach to helping Hawaii’s youth with substance abuse problems

Clinical placement through the Battered Women's Advocacy Project at Suffolk University Law School assisting a family law attorney with legal issues affecting battered women. Work involved legal research, drafting motions and affidavits, interviewing clients, and shadowing during court proceedings.

Coordinated the Homeless Program, assisted in grant writing and outreach to enlist volunteer attorneys, instrumental in expanding number and frequency of monthly workshops in the areas of Employment Law, Landlord-Tenant Law, and Consumer Rights for residents of transitional housing facilities, and updated and created instructional manuals for those workshops.
