Seismic Network Manager / Seismologist / Tsunami Duty Scientist
As part of a team of duty scientists, I monitor earthquakes worldwide and assess their tsunamigenic potential. We work in pairs on rotating shifts 24x7. Going from zero to 60 in a heartbeat, split-second decisions under pressure are made within 3 to 5 minutes of the earthquake’s origin time in order to warn millions of people residing along the North American coastlines of an incoming tsunami. In between earthquakes, my time is filled with other projects. I am responsible for the seismic data ingest of 1000 global stations via Earthworm and optimize data visuals and alarms within the Earlybird system for quick processing of events. I continually strive for better worldwide seismic data coverage and the updating of station metadata, reducing response time and ensuring the determination of accurate earthquake parameters. Outreach is an important part of our work. I communicate earthquake and tsunami science to diverse audiences through public lectures, site tours, K-12 school presentations, community safety fairs, and media interviews.
Seismologist / Data Analyst
Analyzed continuously-recorded real-time seismic waveform data for quality assurance. Monitored the operational status of the acquisition of real-time seismic data. Part of a team that maintained greater than 98% up-time for a network of 400 6-channel USArray seismic stations for over 9 years. Conducted research in methods of quality control and used teleseisms and other earthquakes daily as a means to evaluate data quality. Developed methods of data visualization for identification of waveform quality issues. Designed and created posters for professional meetings and wrote reports. Wrote and delivered presentations at professional meetings. Spoke with and to scientists, engineers, students, and the public.
