Studying the evolution of immune killing mechanisms in vertebrates and mammals by the comparative immunology approach.

I started in oncology research at Northwestern University. The role of sprouty genes in breast cancer was the focus of the research group. Following this I worked in Dr Geoffrey T. Swanson's lab, where the role of kainate receptors in synaptic plasticity and modulation of neurotransmission is being analyzed. This lab also investigates the role of kainite receptors in epilepsy and pain. My responsibility here included some molecular biology work, biochemistry, electrophysiology and animal work. The electrophysiology (patch clamping) is what interested me most in this lab.

I had a productive 2 year stint in Dr Prem Seth's lab. The focus here was to clone the soluble domain of TGF-beta into an oncolytic Adeno virus and use it in gene therapy for breast cancer. My duties here included cell culture, western blots, plaque assays, viral production, tumor progression studies, blood collection from mice and performing Elisa's for IL-11 and IL-8 cytokines.

This was my 1st job. I was fortunate to have had the guidance of Dr John Kilbane, who has been my mentor to this date. Research here involved utilizing microbes in the desulfurization and denitrogenation of crude oil. I was entrusted with performing PCR, RTPCR, DNA/RNA extraction, southern hybridization and elctroporations. Discussing the progress during lab meetings and literature searches were also emphasized during this period.
