PERSONAL: I was broke. I saw a poster at a friend’s home of a rubber raft standing straight up in a rapid in Grand Canyon. I got hired as a whitewater guide running the rapids—a great way to pay for my education. I learned about leadering, dealing with all kinds of people, managing dangerous situations, and working hard 24/7. Finally, I got married, had five children, and continue to dream of running the rapids. Thankful to find a creative way to pay for my education. WHAT I DO NOW: I am a speaker, facilitator, author, and executive coach. We help leaders, managers, and individuals to hold difficult conversations and to improve their emotional intelligence. For the past 25 years, I have provided organizations with needs-analysis, identified training deficits, created strategies to assist a change in culture, designed curriculum, facilitated training, and assessed business effectiveness. I enjoy helping people build personal and professional capacity to achieve superior results both in on-site instruction and through various media channels such as blogs, articles, and online training. All these efforts are an effective means of improving individual performance and organizational culture. My experience is in dialogue skills, emotional intelligence, conflict resolution, change management, and leadership. I am also the author of Overcoming Fake Talk: How to Hold REAL Conversations that Create Respect, Build Relationships, and Get Results by McGraw Hill. Working on two more books currently. CurrentI created the Academy as a vehicle to deliver online training. The first course we posted was REAL EQ: Managing Emotions to Acheive Results. We wanted to offer a course in emotional intelligence that was easy to access for anyone who was interested in improving the way that they interacted with others. The course has five modules: an introduction and modules on personal awareness, personal management, interpersonal awareness, and interpersonal management. Personal Awareness deals with the process of personal discovery of the triggers that each individual may possess.Personal Management offers a number of personal skills that will help the individual to recognize and manage their emotional reactions. Interpersonal Awareness module helps participants to identify the verbal, visual, and vocal messages that people are sending that signal that they are beginning to become emotional or defensive. Interpersonal Management offers a number of skills for managing the negative emotional reactions of others when rationality is at issue.
