I was a researcher in NetApp's Advanced Technology Group, exploring new technologies for use in future products.Some highlights:– Designed and prototyped policies and mechanisms for automatically moving data between HDD- and SSD-based storage based on access patterns. Results of the project were transferred to the WAFL file system group, forming the basis of NetApp’s Flash Pool technology.– Led a series of projects to better understand customers’ storage workloads. This included developing and deploying a workload capture tool to record I/O traces in live customer environments. Built an analytics infrastructure for analyzing the traces via Hadoop, Hive, and Spark.– Collaborated with various universities on research of interest to NetApp, including CMU and UNC.– Recognized via company-wide Innovation Award: 2009, 2015

My doctoral research used utility functions to automatically configure and tune storage systems. Utility functions provide a way for administrators to express their data storage objectives in terms of higher-level metrics (e.g., performance or data protection). Because the utility functions also encode preferences across these metrics, the storage system is able to automatically evaluate potential configurations, weighing the benefit to one metric against the penalty to another. My research showed that utility is useful for storage provisioning, allowing the system to make cost-effective trade-offs across system metrics, including cost. I also demonstrated how utility can be used to guide automated tuning, enabling the system to determine whether, and how quickly, to optimize.

Worked on automated storage provisioning.My task was to extend Ergastulum, a storage provisioning tool, for use in a utility computing environment. The project required extending Ergastulum with a model of the HP StorageWorks XP512 disk array and enhancing it to support configuring a storage system with a fixed allocation of resources.

Huntsville, Alabama Area

I designed and prototyped circuitry to interface with F-15E radar systems and missile instrumentation. I implemented the interface logic in VHDL, synthesized it into a Xilinx FPGA, and tested it on the actual hardware.
