Over the Summer of 2023, I partook in field-related tasks such as surface water quality sampling different creeks and streams within municipalities as well as MS4 stormwater inspections of different structures such as catch basins, outfalls, headwalls, yard inlets, etc. I've learned valuable skills throughout this internship such as instrument calibration, lab data analysis, and holding the responsibility of reporting water quality monitoring data that would then be transferred to the GA EPD's GOMAS database. When performing surface water quality samples for municipalities such as Tallapoosa, Lee County, and Vienna, I was responsible for recording in-situ measurements for parameters such as turbidity, conductivity, pH levels, stream flow, water temperature, etc. After delivering samples to the AES Lab and receiving the requested analyses for data such as total E.coli, heavy metals, total phosphorous, nitrates, etc., I would organize the collected data to then be reported to GA EPD's GOMAS Database.When inspecting stormwater structures such as outfalls, headwalls, and catch basins, I also was responsible for correctly mapping their locations and updating pertinent information from those inspections into ArcGIS' Field Maps software

My main responsibility while interning for the Planning & Sustainability Department of DeKalb County was to focus on educational outreach and community engagement that would spread awareness on how community members could live more sustainably, reduce their environmental impact, and become more involved with preserving our planet. This usually entailed my efforts in producing public content such as newsletters and press releases, and to open the door for conversations regarding different sustainable policies, operations, and initiatives that helped assist the county in being certified as an official partner of the Atlanta Regional Commission's Green Communities Program. I also had the privilege to help support program coordination of ReLeaf DeKalb II, which was a continued partnership with Trees Atlanta to expand DeKalb's urban tree canopy in both residential and recreational areas. This partnership was necessary not just for the DeKalb community but also for Metro Atlanta as a whole, because a joint effort that includes multiple municipalities and organizations is needed in mitigating the environmental stresses that are concerning to the urban area we call our home. Here is where I helped coordinate tree planting events all around DeKalb County which always included volunteers from a widely diverse background. And took initiative in GIS efforts that helped in finding the best possible locations where DeKalb could increase its tree canopy.

As a Campaign Intern for the organization of Environment Georgia, I had the opportunity to advocate for climate action in local communities within the Gwinnett area. My priority throughout the climate action campaign was to promote the passing of The Build Back Better Budget Plan as well as the Bipartisan Infrastructure Bill. I had the privilege of organizing petitioning and tabling events that demonstrated support for Rep. Carolyn Bourdeaux's climate investment strategies, as well as the opportunity to promote climate teach-ins on Georgia Gwinnett College's campus through flyer posting and creating social media posts.
