This privately-owned provider of integrated media and Internet solutions based in London’s West End had recently expanded to include a small e-business developments team in Dubai, UAE. The Board position provided overall technical direction to the company while managing the new media team to deliver interactive e-business solutions projects. Notably a bespoke Content Management System for Dubai new airport website, and the first Emirates Airline customer loyalty programme web site.

This 500+ staff subsidiary of The Thomson Corporation provides intellectual property information. The initial project manager role was key to a new Business Solutions team of ten which generated c.15% of the company total £60m turnover. The role on leaving had accountability for the programme of strategic Internet product developments managing a team of about 20 web database applications development staff:

Co-founded one of the very first web-presence service providers in Europe: This Internet start-up also produced leading-edge CGI animation. In this dynamic setting the role ranged from hands-on scripting to client-relations and project delivery. Key works included the first websites of BT Global Finance, Emirates Airline group and Imperial Cancer Research Fund. Also the ThrustSSC world land-speed record website (partnered with DEC/Compaq).

Projects / clients included:- SONY Broadcasting UK: Advised on the business case for migration to Windows desk-top environment. - At ARCO Indonesia, proposed solutions strategy to re-engineer business processes to integrate multidisciplinary data (seismic, geologic, engineering etc.). And managed the in-house data management service. - For Emirates Airline (via Stealth International) planned an SSADM-approach technical proposal for an early call-scheduling, marketing and fares database system.

Influenced significant systems developments at the global drilling department in support of the most extensive corporate cultural change programme in the UK. Project managed leading-edge 3GL/4GL developments for Management Information Systems including interactive tutorials for the Executive. Led the development of a pioneering free-text retrieval knowledge-base system (search engine).

Progressed from entry-level petroleum geologist to manage well-bore navigation (directional drilling) technical teams on drilling rigs. Provided, on four continents, petrophysical data acquisition services from early computerisation through earliest telemetric measurement-while-drilling downhole systems.
