The Executive Director is responsible to direct the implementation of Merrick's strategic plan; encompassing its mission, vision, values, and goals developed in collaboration with the Board of Trustees. In this capacity, the Executive Director will provide the leadership to incorporate the strategic plan into the daily operations of the company and ensure a positive work environment characterized by challenging work, a team approach to problem solving, individual recognition for excellence, and the collective celebration of success. The Executive Director chairs the Director Team and is an ex-officio member of the Board of Trustees and all Board and Staff committees.Responsibilities:1. Prepare, implement, monitor, and report on the company’s goals and annual budget consistent with its corporate statements and as approved by the Board of Trustees.2. Manage all aspects of daily operations within policies established by the Board of Trustees, ensuring compliance to all applicable licensing regulations, especially 245B.07 (Subd 8) & relevant employment laws.3. Newtrax, Inc., is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) corporation founded by Merrick, Inc., and PAI, Inc., with a mission to “increase the potential of each member organization to advance their charitable mission more effectively and with greater efficiency”. Presently Newtrax provides transportation and information technology services to its members and will make building maintenance available in 2016. The savings from this collaborative business enterprise allows both agencies to better fulfill their charitable mission of providing support and service to adults with disabilities. A long-term goal is to add 2 – 5 new members to the collaborative.

Bock Associates, is a national health care and human services management and consulting firm. The company specialized in providing consulting services and project management to public and private long term care (LTC) agencies responsible for the care of people with mental illness, developmental disabilities, and people who are elderly. In my tenure,, the company worked with twelve states in some capacity with their Pre-Admission Screening and Annual Resident Review (PASARR) program. The position was responsible for the daily operations of all Bock Associates projects, including formation of a business plan; marketing, diversification and proposal writing activities; project model design and start-up; recruiting, contracting/hiring, and training experienced, highly qualified project personnel and clinical contractors; developing evaluation protocols and comprehensive training manuals; supervising the operations of the computerized tracking systems; and the design, implementation and monitoring of internal quality assurance systems.

Founder and former board member of a corporation that provided waivered residential services to 200 people with developmental disabilities. During my tenure the company grew to a budget of ten million dollars in annual revenues and employed 325 staff in 65 homes throughout twelve counties in Minnesota. The program was highly regarded by county and state staff for providing quality services that promoted an integration in and commitment to community-based partnerships. On 1 July 1994, in an amicable transaction, I sold my interest in the company to my three business partners. In 1999, the company was sold to the Roger E. Miller (REM) Corporation and was later sold to Mentor, Inc.

As the largest Intermediate Care Facility for the Mentally Retarded (ICF/MR) in the state, the home became outdated as the state moved in the direction of small community-based programs. In cooperation with the owners, we were successful in structuring a closure agreement with the Minnesota Department of Human Services. Over the course of 18 months we were able to place 159 men into community placements while maintaining daily operations at the facility. My major responsibilities included: supervision of a multi-disciplinary staff including nineteen department managers and 135 direct care staff; fiscal responsibility of a five million dollar budget; ensuring appropriate service delivery to 159 people with developmental disabilities; and liaison with county, state, and federal licensing agencies, families and client advocacy organizations.

In response to the St. Paul School Board's budgetary decision to eliminate adult education classes for people with mental retardation, I coordinated the joint efforts of seven professionals from different residential programs to cooperatively administer an independent program. The corporation was a not-for profit 501(c)(3), and the board was responsible for fundraising, establishing a curriculum, hiring teachers, advertising, securing space and supervising the operations. The long-term goal was to re-incorporate the program into the St. Paul School Adult Education Program. In 1988, this goal was realized and the programs continue today within that curriculum.
