A "Site Miner" for Morgan State University (MSU) in its participation within the Maryland Innovation Initiative (MII), a partnership between the State of Maryland and five Maryland academic research institutions (Johns Hopkins University; Morgan State University; University of Maryland, Baltimore; University of Maryland, Baltimore County; University of Maryland, College Park). The MII was created to foster the transition of promising research and technologies with significant commercial potential - from where they were discovered from among the five universities - to the commercial sector, where they can be developed into products and services that meet identified market needs. The intent of the Program is to foster the commercialization of such technologies through technology validation, market assessment, and the creation of start-up companies in Maryland. Site Miners are the ‘champions’ for each application during the review process and are responsible to present each application at appropriate MII review committee meetings.My specific task was to “mine" and advance promising commercial ideas and opportunities throughout MSU, and to work alongside the MSU Office of Technology Transfer and Intellectual Property to assemble interdisciplinary teams to rapidly move those ideas forward through the MII and beyond. I do this by bringing those with practical problems that need solving together with those who can find solutions; seeking out "diamonds in the rough" that are suitable for commercialization; bridging MSU research and surrounding entrepreneurial communities; and assisting in finding the resources needed to bring projects to fruition.
