  • First Pacific Company Limited
    Head Of Investor Relations
First Pacific Company Limited May 2010 - Present
    Hong Kong
I am in charge of all aspects of investor relations and, more broadly, shaping the public face of First Pacific, a leading investment management and holding company active in emerging Asia. We are active managers, meaning we must control or hold strong influence over our investments to ensure we are in a position to release locked-up cash flows over time. The result we aim for is increased dividend flow to First Pacific to finance our own dividend payments to our shareholders, share repurchases, and further investments.
  • Hong Kong Mercantile Exchange
    Head Of Corporate Communications
Hong Kong Mercantile Exchange Dec 2008 - May 2010
I participated in a valiant but eventually futile attempt to build the first-ever exchange to smooth pricing and maximize transparency in commodities trading in Asian time zones. HKMEx was based in Hong Kong to take advantage of its access to China under the One Country, Two Systems jurisdiction. This is the most business-friendly environment the world has to offer, and we felt the time had come to set Asian prices in Asia rather than in Chicago, New York or London. Postscript: In the end, this was a great idea, weakly executed. Shanghai is now taking on this role.
  • Fincom Consulting Limited
    President
Fincom Consulting Limited Jun 2007 - Dec 2008
    Hong Kong
Founder and President of independent financial communications and consulting firm. Project successes included: developing client marketing and communications program for a hedge fund; developing philanthorpic activities for a major financial institution; developing conference programmming from conception to execution; and consulting for internet marketing firm on reputation management. Brief period here working for Western Union, an experience I still puzzle over.
  • Hsbc
Head Of Corporate Communications, Cibm Asia-Pacific
    Hsbc Aug 2004 - May 2007
    Hong Kong
In charge of public relations, events & conferences, road-show support, marketing & advertising, and on-line publishing & design for Corporate, Investment Banking and Markets, Asia-Pacific (at the time, this was a US$4 billion business in its own right). I left the bank during one of that industry's regular cullings.
  • Dow Jones Newswires
    Hong Kong Bureau Chief
Dow Jones Newswires Oct 2001 - Aug 2004
    Hong Kong
Managed a team of 15 reporters and editors covering the Asia-Pacific region's second-biggest financial market. Duties included guiding the bureau's news coverage; assigning and supervising features stories; operating a budget; and regular appearances on CNBC and Hong Kong television stations to report on and discuss the news of the day. I really enjoyed that part of the job.
  • Dow Jones Newswires
    Moscow Bureau Chief
Dow Jones Newswires Oct 1998 - Sep 2001
    Moscow, Russian Federation
Responsible for covering a little-understood and volatiel financial market and economy. Managed a team of five staff reporting on companies and a government that had little time for transparency. Worked closely with the larger Moscow bureau of the Associated Press, a fine organization in its own right. Successes were defined by how much copycat coverage and price movement we stirred.
  • Russian Financial News
    Managing Director
Russian Financial News May 1998 - Sep 1998
    Moscow, Russian Federation
This was a Moscow-based dot-com start-up, probably one of the first ever. We built the sole non-exchange source of live pricing of Russian Treasury bills and bonds at a time of intense interest from international investors in high-yield sovereign debt securities. We went live 17 days before the Russian government defaulted on $100 billion of debt, completely wiping out our business model.
  • Pioneer Securities
    Equities Salesman
    Pioneer Securities Oct 1997 - May 1998
    Moscow, Russian Federation
This was a Moscow brokerage focused on illiquid Russian shares, aiming to market them to institutional investors seeking major alpha in a stock market that saw some of the greatest gains of the mid-90s. My market timing was a bit off: I joined the firm at a stock market peak that wasn't seen again for another six years. I sold more shares than more experienced salemen in a steadily declining market and learned a profound regard for the difficult metier of selling.
  • Bloomberg Lp
    Moscow Bureau Chief
    Bloomberg Lp Jul 1992 - Oct 1997
    Moscow, Russian Federation
I established and led this new (then!) financial newswire's Moscow bureau in an age of primitive telephony and 300-baud modems well before widespread availability of internet access in a city convulsing under the transition from central planning to disordered capitalism. I reported on an economy struggling to get to grips with the end of communism and on the birth of businesses that were later to become giants in their industries. Built from scratch a winning news operation.
  • Hilfe Ltd.
Soviet Union And East European Analyst
    Hilfe Ltd. Sep 1990 - Jun 1992
    London, United Kingdom
I wrote 1,500-word daily reports and analyses on the economic and political changes sweeping through the economies of the former Soviet Bloc, encompassing member nations of the former Comecon. This research, supplemented by longer in-depth analysis, was provided to fund managers and other financial services professionals seeking insights into the newly opening markets of Eastern Europe and the former USSR.
  • Us Army
    Infantry Soldier
    Us Army Aug 1982 - Aug 1984
Fort Benning, Ga And Lucius D. Clay Kaserne, Garlstedt, West Germany
Two of the best years of my life. Infantry basic training was followed by Airborne School at Ft. Benning, Georgia, culminating in parachute wings and a life-long self-description as a five-jump commando. There followed 19 months of active-duty service in the 2nd Armored Division (Forward) in a very modern barracks located between Bremen and Bremerhaven in (West) Germany. Earned the expert infantry badge and served on an M60 machine gun team that won second place in a Nato-wide shooting competition. Spent much time crouched in a dark forest and took part in the famous 1983 Reforger exercise that so spooked the Soviet leadership at the time. Last job was radio-telephone operator telling newly-minted butter bars which way to drive and conducting habitually unanswered post-midnight radio checks using comically out-of-date equipment. An experience little like that of those heroes in today's modern Army.
