In addition, he continues his work in child passenger safety through both participation in child restraint checkpoints as well as continuing to teach child passenger safety classes. Mr. Yannaccone was a consultant to an industrial equipment manufacturer on the development of a system to sense and prevent tip-over of industrial lifting equipment. Served on a team that restored the Navy’s Horizontal Accelerator Facility at the Naval Biodynamics Laboratory to operational status. This facility was used to conduct live-subject testing to measure human injury tolerance. Conducted sled testing for child restraints in collaboration with Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. Supported the Navy on a project for National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to evaluate Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) 213 and make recommendation for updating the requirements of the standard. Had a significant role in a program for the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) to investigate improved restraint for occupants in the patient compartment of ambulances, this included selection of restraints, conducting sled and crash testing and analyzing the data from this testing. Was a principal participant in the design and development of the Common Crashworthy Occupant Protection System (CCOPS) for Army wheeled trucks. This design resulted in a patent on the system on which Mr. Yannaccone is a co-inventor.Also supported programs and consulted with several manufacturers to evaluate both the design as well as the performance of their products including seating and restraint systems for both ground vehicles and aviation. Automotive testing included evaluation of a new design for seat bottom cushions, the effect of asymmetric anchor points and load limiting loops, dynamic seatback strength, and occupant kinematics in various crash orientations. He was responsible for designing test fixtures, conducting test programs, and electronic and photographic test data analysis.As Dynamic Flight Simulator (DFS) facility engineer, he was responsible for test operations, design and implementation of crew stations and structure for use in the DFS.Operated the US Navy’s Fuel Fire Test Facility, which was used for full-scale fuel fire testing to assess the thermal protection capabilities of garments for the Navy.Participated in tests on the Navy’s man-rated ejection tower, which simulates the catapult phase of ejection from an aircraft and which included live-subject qualification testing of various aviation equipment. As Armament Group project engineer, he modified and developed armament support equipment, as well as a new rail launcher specification for the Navy and Royal Canadian Air Force, and was responsible for assuring interface compatibility to all Navy aircraft. As a student trainee in the Fuel Systems Group of the Aero Mechanical Engineering Branch, he assisted in designing, testing, and evaluating fuel cells for Naval aircraft.
