Managed a team of engineers building Amazon's internal service development frameworks. These core frameworks are used by nearly every software development team at Amazon. Amazon was actively moving or building internal services to flesh out the rapidly growing AWS offerings. We introduced a new Java and C++ framework (replacing an existing internal only framework we also supported), along with service development guidelines to allow service owners to rapidly build new externalizable services by focusing on the business logic of their offering and leaving the protocols, throttling, logging, metrics, and overall connectivity to us.In this role, I actively coordinated with service development teams, product managers, and engineering managers across Amazon. Given the cross-cutting impact of our development, I was responsible for coordinating working groups that spanned most core services at Amazon and multiple Principal, Sr. Principal, and Director level employees at Amazon.Hired and led a second team focused on service identification and security, enabling service teams across the company to easily identify acceptable clients and sensitive data, with little service owner coding.Worked with internal and external recruiters to grow the overall team from 5 engineers to 11.

* Worked with fellow engineers to design and implement a fully distributed metric collection and aggregation infrastructure that computes counts, averages, and percentiles on counters and timers across Amazon's infrastructure at 1, 5, and 60 minute granularities. This infrastructure is a key component of Amazon's highly data driven environment. * Researched, designed, and implemented three fully automated metric forecasting algorithms. A general case time series predictor, an adapting order rate predictor (patented under "Robust forecasting techniques with reduced sensitivity to anomalous data"), and a time since last order prediction for handling lower volume sites. * Designed Amazon's next generation metric storage system: processing, storing and retrieving millions of metrics at per-minute granularity, gaining expertise in efficiently visualizing vast sums of data to drive time-critical decisions. * Led Amazon's cross-team Recovery Oriented Computing efforts delivering automated fault handling for large portions of Amazon's compute resources, resulting in the elimination of thousands of hours in operations every year and an increase in site availability.

As a software developer on Amazon's Performance and Monitoring team, I helped implement a real-time metric alarming system to detect unexpected changes in hundreds of thousands of metrics processed by Amazon's internal monitoring systems. Jumping in to the operational aspects (at the time, the team was first level escalation for all performance issues on Amazon's website), I took two weeks of on-call and actively troubleshooted and resolved customer facing issues and outages.
