About Joia Miller

I am someone who loves to connect the dots between small details and the systems they affect in both carefully controlled research systems and in everyday life. I see science as a way of studying such systems and communication as a necessary part of making scientific discovery useful and effective.In my PhD, this took the form of understanding how properties of micron-sized rods such as their length or chirality affected self-assembly and interactions between particles in a membrane system made up of millions of copies of those rods. Alongside my research, the same principles drove me to become a founding member of three initiatives at Brandeis University with different audiences ranging from undergraduates through faculty. We created all three programs to increase people’s understanding of and ability to communicate how their scientific observations and interests were important to and fit in the bigger picture. In my postdoctoral work, I looked for the bridge between microscopic interactions and macroscopic material properties in shear thickening suspensions that can be used to make body armor, among other things.Computational Experience: Python, MATLAB, CellProfiler, Harmony, ImageJ, Powerpoint, Word, Excel, Keynote, Blender, Adobe Illustrator, basics of C, C++, LabView, MathematicaTechnical Skills: image analysis, time series analysis, large data processing, optical microscopy, confocal microscopySoft Skills: creative problem solving, communication to varied audiences, mental modeling, collaboration, leadership experience, mentoring, strategic planningPhoto courtesy of Heratch Ekmekjian.
