Together with other stakeholders in the education system, we aim to tackle the teacher shortage in Maths, Sciences, French and Dutch, felt particularly acutely in schools with students from a low socio-economic background, and so help reduce educational inequities in Belgium.Via Teach for Belgium’s Leadership Development Programme I taught full-time for two years in a school in Brussels while also benefitting from continuous training and support. Together with Zambian friends I established a Zambian NGO. We focus on water, education and training in remote areas. Since 2016 I worked as a volunteer for these projects, of which I spent 6 months in the country itself. In cooperation with the Red Cross, and as coordinator for the social services, I established a project for homeless people and migrants to help them make a change in the situation they are living in. During their stay in the centre, we encourage the residents to start a process with the social services and inform them of their options, putting them on a road to reflection and empower them to move forward.
