(T&S generates a significant proportion of RDS NIBIAT and employs 7,000 employees and contractors across 30+ countries) Shell’s Trading and Supply (T&S) business is the largest and most profitable energy trading business in the world and is recognised as the most fast paced, commercial part of Shell. (Businesses employing 10,000 thousand employees, across 5 countries and an HR team of 100) As one of Shell’s two HQ countries, the UK is often described as being at the heart of Shell’s matrix organisation and the UK HR Director requires first class relationship building, communication and influencing skills to manage the differing interests of Shell’s businesses and represent the enterprise externally :• effectively merged BG into Shell UK, beating market expectations of the speed and synergies, • halved the time and cost of organisational change through a radical transformation of staff consultation and redundancy provisions,• conducted an employee benefits review to deliver an improved package at lower cost (£26m recurrent annual savings and £80m reduction in pensions liabilities), • improved employee and line manager experience through stronger partnership with HR Services,• reinvigorated work on Diversity & Inclusion – introducing quarterly D&I events, strengthening employee networks and publishing Shell UK’s first Gender Pay Gap Report.

($12bn CFFO businesses employing 10k employees across 12 countries and an HR team of 80) I ran this as two jobs; the HR lead for Qatar Shell which was a $10bn per annum cash engine, and a second role as the line manager to a talented team of HR Directors for Shell’s businesses across the region. In Qatar I:• improved employee engagement by 7% - well into the top quartile and above internal benchmarks – by setting out a clear forward path in a ‘Journey Book’ with included an updated people strategy,• doubled the number of Qataris on the leadership team, a critical license to operate issue for our partner Qatar Petroleum,• supported the transition from a project to operations mindset with a significant investment in front line leader capability,• restored credibility to the HR department. In my role for the wider region, I re-established momentum on middle eastern talent, significantly improved the affiliation of Shell secondees to Joint Ventures (JVs) and implemented an updated HR operations model across the region, reducing cost and reliance on expats.

(£300m NIBIAT business employing, 4000 employees employed across 6 countries) My key objective was to help Lori Rykerk, an executive level recruit from Exxon, find her feet and flourish in the Shell culture. As Lori went on to run Shell’s global Manufacturing business as her next assignment, I am going to call our partnership a success! Together with Lori we:• drove improved safety, operational and financial performance through the introduction of LEAN continuous improvement methodologies and increased best practice sharing across the region,• successfully navigated the divestment of refineries in Sweden, Germany and the UK, • introduced a flagship development programme for new Production Unit Managers recognising the critical influence this role plays in both refinery performance and longer-term succession planning.

($1bn NIBIAT businesses employing 7000 thousand employees in Malaysia and an HR Community of 100+) Malaysia remains one of Shell’s heartland countries with a 100+ year history and pretty much every Shell business line present. My mission was to bring alignment and consistency to the HR offerings and upgrade the capability of the Malaysian HR community. During my tenure I:• established a clear people strategy for Shell’s businesses in Malaysia, • oversaw a major harmonisation of policy, pay and benefits – significantly reducing costs of the Medical Benefits which had been growing at 10% pa, • introduced technical salary scales to stem attrition and reduce reliance on expatriates by 15%, • successfully piloted the migration of operational HR tasks to a shared services model which was then rolled out globally based on best practice established in Malaysia, • established the Malaysian HR community as a role model of cross business collaboration,• strengthened Malaysian HR succession planning to ensure that I was the last expatriate in the role!

    London, England, Gb
  • Shell
    Americas Ep Recruitment Manager
    Shell Jun 2000 - Jul 2001
    London, England, Gb
Towards the end of my assignment in European Recruitment Gerard Penning, was appointed as the new Global Recruitment Manager for Shell. Gerard wanted to replace what had essentially been the recruitment of the brightest and best in the UK and Netherlands with a truly global approach to recruitment. I was asked to implement the new model in the US, just a few years after Shell Oil had been reintegrated into the wider group, a critical first step in the global deployment. The project was a huge success – the 50 graduate recruits I delivered were recognised to be of higher quality than their predecessors, and, more importantly, the way that I trained and engaged with the team of 40 high potential US assessors all but eliminated earlier resistance that ‘this will never work in the States’.

    Shell International Ltd. 1997 - 2000

The partnership’s flagship mentoring programme, which matched Shell staff with vulnerable young Centrepoint residents, executive development activities and series of well attended fundraising events was recognised as best practice and rewarded with a prestigious City of London Dragon Award for social investment.
  • Shell

    Shell Aug 1995 - Sep 1996
    London, England, Gb
I was asked to move to Aberdeen to take part in a small team charged with redesigning the allowances and benefits for our offshore staff in the North Sea. The communication and engagement plan I designed helped us to remove complexity and cost whilst maintaining employee engagement. Alongside the Allowances Review I also led the development of a ‘Too Fat to Fly’ policy and the first no smoking policy for the offices.
  • Shell
    Human Resources Advisor
    Shell Jul 1993 - Jul 1995
    London, England, Gb
Choosing to start my career with Shell because of the international nature of the business they sent me to Lowestoft, Suffolk! The new HR graduates were thrown to the Well Engineers, a population of about 50 employees, to cut their teeth, before moving on to support onshore populations of Business Services, Development, Engineering and Projects some 250 employees in total.
  • King'S College London
    Management Department Tutorial Assistant
    King'S College London Sep 1992 - Jun 1993
    London, Greater London, Gb
I led tutorials on Organisation Behaviour, Organisational Development and Economics for first and final year Managements Studies students. The Professor I worked for also involved me in some of his executive education work – my favourite being a time management programme for London Underground staff!
  • King'S College London
    Students' Union President
    King'S College London Jul 1991 - Jun 1992
    London, Greater London, Gb
Simply an amazing opportunity for a twenty-one-year-old to lead an organisation and, even now, ranks as one of my favourite roles. During my Presidency student turnout for elections, by far the best indicator of student engagement, quadrupled, we secured close to one million pounds of investment to redevelop the student union bar, night club and retail facilities, doubling usage and revenue in the process. I helped shape a significant repositioning of the King’s Academic strategic plan and property portfolio and redesigned the student union governance structures to actively involve a broader set of students more likely to represent the views and wishes of the wider student population
