As the Head of the Actuarial Section, I led a team of 11 Actuaries and support staff in delivering a comprehensive actuarial education program accredited by the Actuarial Society of South Africa. The program catered to around 500 students annually and was recognised as the top actuarial program in South Africa by the Actuarial Society of South Africa.- I analysed qualitative and quantitative student data to identify how we could change the program to better serve the diverse student body, for example by identifying our most vulnerable students and creating interventions to support them.- I used retrospectives, check-ins, and other agile methodologies to improve workflow and communication. - I mentored junior lecturers and researchers.- I managed relationships with a wide range of stakeholders in order to continuously improve the programme.- I challenged legacy academic teaching approaches and introduced a student-centric approach, making courses more accessible to a diverse student body.- I also served as a Trustee on the UCT Retirement Fund and brought about a significant simplification of fund structure by analysing fund data to better understand the choices members were making.As a Senior Lecturer, I was involved in teaching and research activities.- My research involved quantitative data analysis , and included: - Happiness in retirement, based on data from a national data set. - Superannuation fund design, based on fund member data. - Student experience using diary studies, which fed into further evolution of the curriculum.- I taught highly technical financial and statistical concepts with very favourable student evaluations for conveying difficult material in an accessible manner.- I increased student participation and performance and built trust and engagement by adding interactive elements, gathering feedback, constantly evolving and adapting, and generally “training from the back of the room”.

JMCA (now part of the NMG group) was a consultancy which advised retirement funds, individuals, and insurance companies on issues related to employee benefits. As CTO I was responsible for the Actuarial, Consulting, Healthcare, and Administration teams, ensuring product delivery was streamlined and consistent across business areas. - I managed all technical divisions, ensuring quality advice and services were provided. - I provided support and mentoring to junior staff. - I contributed to company strategy through the Executive Committee.- I consulted to a variety of clients on demographic, financial and investment related issues. This involved quantitative analysis of demographic and economic data.- I worked with the Department of Labour and the National Treasury, conducting quantitative and qualitative research on the effect of social security reform proposals on trade union superannuation funds. I collected industry data, interviewed respondents, and prepared and presented reports. My findings led to adjustments in the reform design.- I developed and delivered country-wide educational sessions on the reform proposals, helping key stakeholders understand the choices to be made.- I developed and facilitated trustee training, creating materials tailored to the level of the audience, and delivering training presentations using clear, simple language.

The Investment Business Unit was a division of Old Mutual which provided a wide range of investment vehicles, including Unit Trusts, in-house Specialist funds, Optimised Funds, Multi-manager funds and derivative-based instruments, all designed around a life assurance wrapper. Responsibilities included: • Design, specification and implementation of investment products;• Development of processes to match investment liabilities;• Marketing Analysis
