Profile bio

About Jolinde Van Bergen

I am an enthusiastic Neurobiology master’s graduate, with a particular interest in translational research in the field of Psychiatry and Neuroendocrinology. Research concerning the influence of environmental and genetic factors on the pathogenesis of psychiatric and metabolic diseases fascinates me, as this is paramount for the discovery of novels therapeutics. This interest was further solidified during the multiple long-term internships I completed, providing me with a solid foundation in behavioral research, wet lab techniques, and data analysis.

Research Intern

Munich, Bavaria, Germany

Title: “The impact of atg7 and FKBP51 in the mediobasal hypothalamus on behaviour and metabolism”. PI: dr. Mathias Schmidt, Research Group Stress Resilience, Max Planck Institute of Psychiatry, Munich, Germany. This project focused on the interaction of stress-related behavioral and metabolic phenotypes in the context of psychiatric and metabolic disorders. Specifically, we aimed to decipher the interplay of the stress-regulator protein FKBP51 with cellular autophagy in the hypothalamus. This project required me to learn and apply a wide variety of different techniques, including complex behavioral tests, stereotactic surgery, various wet lab and imaging techniques, metabolic phenotyping using indirect calorimetry, and machine-learning algorithms to assess complex social behavior.Grade: 8.5/10

Intern

Animal Welfare Body Leiden

Leiden, Zuid-Holland, Nederland

Title: "Following the development and outcome of projects: Dutch Animal Welfare Bodies and their use of experimental work protocols"In this project, I set up and performed a qualitative study using content analysis on survey data to compare the different Dutch Animal Welfare Bodies (AWBs) with regards to their use of working protocols to monitor research projects involving laboratory animals.Abstract:As prescribed by EU Directive 2010/63, one of the responsibilities of Animal Welfare Bodies (AWBs) is to ‘follow the development and outcome of projects, taking into account the effect on the animals used, and identify and advise as regards elements that further contribute to the 3R’s’. As this directive primarily provides a general outline of this task, it is up to individual AWBs to determine how to best formalize this function. In the Netherlands, it is common practice for researchers to submit an experimental work protocol (i.e., detailed description of hypothesis-driven experiment) to the AWB prior to the start of an experiment, which allows AWBs to review the study. By subdividing a project into multiple experiments that are separately reviewed, experimental work protocols could be useful tools for AWBs to follow the development and outcome of projects. Since the protocol evaluation is not a formal task of AWBs, we were interested in the role it plays in the AWB’s responsibilities. This study has evaluated how different Dutch AWBs might follow the development and outcome of projects by means of the experimental work protocol procedure. To achieve this, a survey was sent to Dutch AWBs. Overall, we argue that the use of experimental work protocols covers nearly all aspects of the task to follow the development and outcome of projects. To cover all aspects of this task, additional strategies can be used (e.g., welfare diaries, retrospective project analyses).

Additionally, motivational behavior was assessed using a lever pressing task. Tasks included animal handling (rats), assisting during FSCV measurements and behavioral tests, various wet lab techniques (brain sectioning and immunohistochemistry), and data anaysis (MATLAB).
