About Jo Mynard
Dr. Jo Mynard is an applied linguist and specialist in learner autonomy and supporting language learning outside the classroom. She is a Professor in the Faculty of Global Liberal Arts and Director of the Self-Access Learning Center (SALC) at Kanda University of International Studies (KUIS) in Japan, where she has worked since 2008. She is also the Director of the Research Institute for Learner Autonomy Education (RILAE) at KUIS. At KUIS, she advises language learners and oversees operations, research and the general direction of the SALC. She teaches undergraduate courses in English for Global Liberal Arts and Self-Directed Learning. She also teaches graduate courses as part of the MA TESOL programme at the KUIS Graduate school. She co-developed and co-coordinates the continuing professional development courses in Advising in Language Learning and Advisor Education. In addition, she occasionally teaches on the Doctoral and MA programmes in TESOL at the University of Anaheim (USA / online). She supervises MA TESOL students at KUIS and the University of Birmingham (UK).She has been the editor of SiSAL Journal (Studies in Self-Access Learning) since its foundation in 2010. She is also one of the founding editors of Relay Journal and The Journal for the Psychology of Language Learning (JPLL).She is an executive board member of the International Association for the Psychology of Language Learning (IAPLL) and serves as the association's Publications Officer.She was an IATEFL Learner Autonomy Special Interest Group committee member from 2001 to 2018 and remains a SIG advisor. http://lasig.iatefl.orgShe is the owner and Managing Director of Candlin & Mynard ePublishing (founded in 2012) and Series Editor of the Autonomous Language Learning series http://candlinandmynard.comHer professional interests are learner autonomy, advising in language learning, self-access learning, affect and CALL. Director Self-Access Learning Centre
I have worked at KUIS since April 2008 as the Director of the Self-Access Learning Centre (SALC). I oversee the strategic planning and day to day work of the SALC and work closely with learning advisors, admin staff, designers and student staff. I have overall responsibility for curriculum, research, budget, events, resources and learning spaces in the SALC.The SALC is a state of the art language learning centre filled with over 10,000 resources such as books, magazines, games, DVDs, CDs and MDs which offer opportunities for individualized learning for students. In addition to the large variety of materials, there are different areas and rooms within the SALC where students can carry out language learning. There are areas equipped with everything students need to use the materials such as CD, MD and DVD players, computer stations, speaking booths, group access areas and multi-purpose rooms (MPRs). The system is designed to enable students to learn in their own time and to develop language skills for the real world. Learning advisors and other staff are on hand to help users and the SALC offers various courses designed to promote learner autonomy.

The main themes in the journal relate to self-access learning and skills support centres with the aim of promoting learner autonomy.This online journal was established by Jo Mynard in April 2010 as a research project at Kanda University of International Studies. The journal was originally intended to be an in-house project, but was soon extended due to interest expressed by colleagues in the field. The journal is now a fully international, peer-reviewed, open-access publication indexed by seven databases. It typically receives around 2000 hits per month. The IATEFL Learner Autonomy SIG is one of 14 IATEFL Special Interest Groups. It is for teachers, learning advisors and teacher educators who are interested in autonomy in language learning and all that it implies.I contribute to the direction of this group by being part of its organising committee.
