My job fell into several areas.I ran the lab. This meant that I supervised the work of the technicians on a daily basis (or as often as necessary) and made sure that things got done. I implemented all the lab procedures myself. This meant that I “developed” them, modified them, streamlined them, and taught them to the technicians.Charles Sibley and I worked out strategy together, most often in daily “brainstorming sessions.” Charles and I designed and built (or had constructed for us) a lot of our lab apparatus. When we had enough data for a paper, Charles invariably wrote the first draft. Then, we tossed it back and forth, refining it. I analyzed the data, did most of the literature (library) work, and prepared the illustrations.I worked for the Museum. The Museum is a public institution, and an important part of my position was in public relations. 
People came to the bird room to ask questions about birds, and I may have been the first individual they saw and the one who helped them out. Over the years I became he liaison between ornithology and much of the rest of the Museum. For example, during the five years when a new Hall of Connecticut Bird Life was built, I acted as an advisor to the design and building staff for the “scientific” aspects of the exhibit. From the chief exhibit designer (herself a Yale MFA), I learned a lot about color and design for my own art work. I learned practical skills from the mechanicians who built the exhibits. At Yale teaching was a small part of my overall work. Charles and I taught a class in ornithology (birds) one semester a year.
