Professor Of Chemical Engineering
My research focus was in the area of friction and wear of metals and polymers at nanometer scales. My primary tools consisted of Atomic Force Microscopy (Lateral force and colloidal force microscopy), Ultra-high Vacuum Scanning Tunneling Microscopy, and Piezoelectric sensing (QCM). I was a CAREER award recipient, a Petroleum Research Society Award recipient, and had support from industry as well. My most signficant accomplishment was relating the friction of thin layers of UHMWPE to alpha-relaxations in the polymer.I taught Thermodynamics and Fluid Mechanics to over 250 students, and received a Mortar Board award for excellence in teaching.
