The Joinery designs and handcrafts beautiful hardwood furniture for residential and commercial spaces. Since taking over the company in 2013, Jon has opened its flagship showroom in downtown Portland and purchased and moved the company to a new manufacturing facility that triples its manufacturing space. He has developed the commercial sales channel and completed projects with numerous high-profile clients in the greater Portland area and beyond. Along the way Jon led his team to develop company values and mission statement, and instituted a management operating system that engaged and empowered the team. The Joinery is a certified B Corp and is recognized for its business practices and community engagement. It is regularly named one of Oregon’s Best Green Companies by Oregon Business Magazine and Oregon’s Most Admired Companies by the Portland Business Journal in their annual awards. The company also won the Portland Business Journal's Oregon Manufacturer of the Year honor in 2019.

Hutani helps clients develop and execute sustainability strategies that improve long-term competitiveness. Client projects include:• Developing corporate environmental mission and comprehensive sustainability strategy, including priority, timelines and ownership• Conducting environmental analysis of client's product line, benchmarked against environmental impacts of the key competitor• Developing a product environmental scorecard • Developing website update to introduce client's environmental initiatives, discuss progress and compare environmental performance between products• Developing communications pieces highlighting the environmental performance of the client’s products versus key competitors• Developed and delivered a cross-cultural training program for client’s Thailand subsidiary; delivered the program to American and Thai staff, helping both groups understand key similarities and differences between the two cultures, common points of friction and how to navigate them• Currently serve as Sustainability Officer for Hong-Kong-based packaging company, responsible for developing and driving environmental programs
