As a Field Service Engineer in UOP's Field Operating Services department, I provide technical support to customers world-wide during the start-up of their UOP-licensed commercial unit. In addition to unit start-ups, I also provide hands-on and technical support to customers loading UOP catalyst or installing UOP vessel internals. Refining and petrochemical technologies I work with include hydrotreating, hydrocracking, mercaptan extraction, aromatics transalkylation, propane dehydrogenation, and crude fractionation. During these assignments, some key tasks I perform include:•Formulating a mass balance that utilizes DCS data and analytical results to calculate guarantee parameters and provide an in-depth look into current unit performance.•Writing and issuing reports to the customer to document the procedures followed during specific stages of the unit start-up.•Inspecting and advising during installation of UOP vessel internals and loading of UOP catalyst to ensure long term operational reliability and performance.•Participating in detailed checkouts of the process units prior to their start-up by cross referencing actual field inspections of vessels, instruments, and piping with Piping and Instrument Diagrams and vessel drawings to ensure the complex is built per design specifications.•Assisting the customer with usage of UOP's plant data gathering software used to monitor unit performance and calculate key process indicators.

Worked with UOP's Oleflex technology, a process that catalytically converts a light paraffin - typically propane and/or isobutane - to its corresponding mono-olefin. Performed several commercial data reviews to analyze unit performance and advise customers on how to optimize unit operation. Developed a web-based training curriculum for UOP’s Oleflex(TM) process to train UOP customers. Also assisted UOP's analytical department with sample testing and analysis of Oleflex(TM) catalyst previously used in commercial service.Also spent time in UOP's Training Simulators Development Group, mainly testing UOP’s Oleflex(TM) Training Simulator to provide software programmers with the technical expertise needed to match model response to actual commercial operation. Created troubleshooting scenarios for UOP’s Oleflex(TM) Training Simulator that teach trainees how to properly respond to specific unit upsets encountered in UOP’s Oleflex(TM) technology. Wrote detailed start-up and shutdown procedures for our customer-specific Oleflex(TM) Training Simulators that allow operators to practice and prepare for the start-up and shutdown of their commercial Oleflex(TM) unit.

As an intern in the Research and Development department at UOP, I was tasked with testing whether a new idea for a heavy oil upgrading process was technically and economically feasible. I operated a pilot plant used to test how different feeds, catalysts, and run conditions affected conversion, product composition, and coke deposition for the fluidized bed hydroprocessing system. I performed various catalyst impregnations and calcinations in an effort to synthesize diverse catalysts for testing in the plant. For analyzing run results, I maintained multiple excel spreadsheets used for retrieving and processing raw plant data and the analysis of analytical results generated during each plant run.

As an intern in the Hydroprocessing and Renewables Technology Services group, I was given many tasks designed to assist UOP Process Specialists and advance my own knowledge on the technologies the group oversees. I created catalyst loading diagrams to assist customers and UOP Field Operating Services during unit reloads and start-ups. I participated in monthly data reviews with customers to discuss catalyst deactivation, daily operations, and the overall performance of their unit. I also designed several Microsoft SharePoint Sites to provide a centralized location for keeping relevant files and correspondence during hydrocracking and hydrotreating unit start-ups.
