Mechanical Fitter
CurrentKomatsu Surface Mining was formerly Joy Global, and formerly P&H, based at Hemmant. As a Mechanical Fitter, I specialise in electrical motor rebuilds - rewinding and servicing electrical motors for heavy equipment in the mining industry. My strength is in precision machining. I design and make jigs and tools to make jobs easier for our team members and to achieve consistent precision. For example:• I designed and made Jigs and tool kits that saved 45 minutes per upgrade, 30 upgrades minimum per week @ $130/hr saved $150K per year.• I designed a Jig to allow for a more consistent tolerance which achieved 0.000008”-0.000013”. Armateur would previously have been machined 2-4 times with a best result of 0.000040” total indicated runout. • Numerous dragline motors came back to Komatsu over 6 months for repair under warranty due to inconsistent profiles. I built a jig to enable more accurate profiling, which greatly reduced warranty issues. Equivalent saving $525K.I was peer-elected to the EBA committee and peer-elected as HSR. I have helped negotiate better pay and conditions on behalf of 30 co-workers, and have highlighted unsafe working practices through risk assessments. Improvements made include new spray booths and new fume extraction for varnish tanks.Current responsibilities include:• Machine commutators in a lathe, profile measurements, undercut grooves, hand bevel grooves after machining to ensure accuracy.• Copy OEM components, grease slingers, new shafts and numerous one-off items in manual lathes.• Press worn shafts from armatures and freeze new shafts back in.• Mig, Tig and Stick weld new components and repairs to electric motor frames.• Operate industrial ovens to help with fitting of shafts.• Use milling machine to make different components and upgrades for motors.• Re-sleeve end shields bearing bores to fine tolerances.• Perform complex calculations, work from detailed drawings and specifications.
