Genres include Fiction, Creative Nonfiction, Poetry, Playwriting & Screenwriting – plus concentrations in teaching, translation, and publishing. Candidates enrolled in the publishing concentration will be the staff of a new publishing house that will select and publish one book each year. The book prize will be open to submissions nationally. Twenty-first century writers compose their work in an environment in which genre has permeable boundaries, and lines between genres are often erased. With this in mind, cross-genre work will be encouraged. Writers will demonstrate expertise in one genre by graduation, and they will also work in a genre other than their declared specialty, usually during the second off-campus term.

The screenwriting major provided a multi-disciplinary experience intended to nurture original cinematic voices and develop critical abilities necessary for lifelong careers in film and television. A core study of screenwriting is supplemented with studies in digital film production, creative writing, media studies, and theater.

I wrote a screenplay that, when made into a safety film, would train church volunteers, staff, etc. in the proper use of social media, especially as it relates to dealing with minors. I helped to film the Catholic Mass that broadcast throughout Minnesota on a weekly basis.
