Design L10 and L11 server/storage hardware; subsequently, work with ODMs in Taiwan to manufacture product in mainland China for assembly, integration, and testing in the U.S. Collaborate with end user technicians and leads within Uber’s data centers, gaining their feedback on new designs from concept to initial build. Created training documentation and detailed service videos. Provide comprehensive contributions to design, tolerance analysis, DFM, DFA, cost reduction, and design-manufacturing problem resolution.Context: Pursued and recruited to join a new start-up team and build a new line of data center servers. Immediately, took on ground-up design work as a 2nd source to the primary design; subsequently, took over all server design work. Generated multimillion-dollar savings by providing conceptual designs for servers and leading them into mass production (Uber leveraged these servers to negotiate better pricing when the need to purchase off-the-shelf OEM devices and Cloud services arose).- Improved ease and speed of service via designs, resulting in significantly lower labor cost for technicians. Paved the way for $10M+ in CAPEX savings (along with OPEX power savings) and additional serviceability cost savings from simplified rack assembly and cable management. Trained and mentored junior engineers. Architected and detail designed a 3.5 spinning HDD platform in 2U and 30 horizontal HDDs that was subsequently used as a platform for multiple future variants of spinning and SSD storage. Prototyped platform, contributed to selection of ODM partner, developed template, and wrote design/CAD standards.- Platform deployed in data centers worldwide, with the platform and its variants all published as open-source design standards through the Open Compute Foundation. Enabled Facebook to save 1,000s of tons of carbon emissions through hardware design adjustments on data center equipment. Located and partnered with a vendor to create a new plastic material, Natural Fiber Polypropylene Plastic (NFPPP), with a low carbon footprint throughout its entire lifecycle.- Worked with FB’s Sustainability department to qualify material as truly low carbon. Played a key role in Facebook’s ability to scale teams rapidly and expand the product line (enabling a single technician to service up to 20,000 servers). Created standards and guides, as well as training interns and junior engineers using the guides. - Additionally, wrote a design review guide for other engineers to use when reviewing details of each other’s and ODM’s CAD – with all standards/guides becoming part of new engineer onboarding.- Was involved in OCP (Open Compute Project) from its inception, set standards for project submittals
