Retiring in July 2015 after 43 years in higher education, Dr. Jon Engelhardt served as Dean of Baylor University’s School of Education since 2007.   After serving as a faculty member in mathematics education at Arizona State University for 16 years, he spent the next 28 years as School/College of Education Dean at the University of Texas at El Paso, Northern Arizona State University, Wichita State University as well as at Baylor.  With primary academic expertise in mathematics and teacher education, he has special interest in children's difficulties learning mathematics. He helped found two professional/research organizations and established one of the first mathematics clinics. He authored/co-authored 4 books and numerous journal articles and scholarly papers in mathematics education (and teacher education).As Dean, he has emphasized cutting edge program development and innovation in educator preparation, for both K-12 teacher and administrators. This work has included building strong and reciprocal partnerships between universities and public schools to improve the effectiveness of both schools and educator preparation. He has held major leadership roles nationally with AACTE, Education School accreditation and an organization redefining the professional practice doctorate in Education. He led efforts to redefine teacher education as a clinical enterprise and has received a variety of recognitions, including the 2015 Howsam Award for lifetime achievement from his 72 colleague Texas Education deans. At Baylor he advocated for student international learning experiences, helped establish a new College of Health and Human Sciences, led much of the creation of the Baylor University/ Scott & While Center for Developmental Disabilities, serving as a community service, graduate training venue, and research vehicle.
