Over the course of my professional career, I have worked to cultivate expertise in four primary areas: healer, teacher, scientist, and leader.In terms of my role as healer; I am a board certified psychiatrist specializing in the treatment of psychological trauma and addiction. I am Chief Medical Officer at Meadows Behavioral Healthcare, a world-renowned behavioral healthcare company. My clinical approach is heavily influenced by contemplative psychology and relational/attachment interventions for personal and interpersonal growth and development.One of my most treasured roles and callings in life is that of teacher. For over a decade I have been teaching individuals about how childhood adversity influences health and wellbeing. I continue to teach and mentor the next generation of healers in my role as Assistant Clinical Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Arizona. I have been fortunate to travel nationally and internationally as a presenter and workshop facilitator - I've met so many amazing people along the way.My role as scientist has taken some time to develop. After years of training in medicine and psychiatry, I went on to obtain a Ph.D. in Human Development from the University of California at Davis. My research explores how childhood maltreatment impacts attachment relationships and cognitive-emotional processes. Recently, I have been investigating the positive effects of mindfulness as a means of healing attachment-related wounds.My role as leader is really about the opportunity to connect with others. I enjoy recruiting the right people for the right position at the right time. I appreciate seeing people grow professionally and guiding teams to become more dynamic and effective. I am a systems person who likes helping organizations function optimally. I have spent much of my career in leadership positions and I treasure the trust people have offered me and the growth I've shared with others.As humans, we have an innate drive to share our ideas and our love. I specialize in the treatment of psychological trauma and addictions of various kinds (e.g., substances, gambling, food, work, sex). I have additional expertise in treating individuals who have experienced childhood maltreatment and attachment disturbances. I work extensively with female trauma survivors and with individuals who have been diagnosed with personality disturbances (i.e., borderline personality disorder).I am psychodynamically trained, which means that I emphasize the importance of developmental experiences when trying to help people understand and improve their current situation. Recently, I received training in Somatic Experiencing and Sensorimotor Psychotherapy, both of which emphasize the importance of facilitating nervous system regulation by enhancing the mind-body connection. My clinical approach has become increasingly flavored by the timeless teachings of the contemplative traditions and the practice of mindfulness meditation.I also perform an administrative role as an assistant to the chief of psychiatry. For example, I work with administrators and department managers to broaden and improve delivery of care at The Meadows. I also work with business development team to enhance relations between The Meadows, therapists and referents in the field, and the general public. I make presentations and conduct workshops for prospective clients, referents, and Meadows’ alumni. I offer editorial support for media materials and I write articles for The Meadows' social media sites, including The Meadows’ blog. I organize and oversee all outcomes research at The Meadows and disseminate the results to our partners and prospective clients in the community.My work at The Meadows allows me to use my skills and talents, while providing a much needed service to others!
