As an Emergency Department Paramedic, I work to perform patient care duties utilizing a team approach in collaboration with RNs, MDs, RTs, and other members of the comprehensive health care team; organizing, prioritizing, and delivering direct patient care based on determined scope of practice within the emergency department hospital setting. I utilize my experience within the ER performing several duties in a fast-paced environment, including but not limited to: triage, direct patient care and dynamic physiological monitoring, inserting IVs, EJs, Ultrasound-Guided IVs, NGTs, and urinary catheters; medication administration, including IV pumps and bolus; oral medications; push-dose medications; subcutaneous medications; IM medications; performing 12 lead EKGs; assisting with wound care and bleeding control; assisting with advanced airway procedures; performing rigid splinting; suctioning; electrotherapy, including synchronized cardioversion, TCP, and defibrillation alongside the MD; monitored patient transport, and completing proper documentation in MedHost.

Powell County, Kentucky

RedSTAR is the volunteer wilderness special operations unit of Kentucky’s Powell County Ambulance Service in the Red River Gorge. Comprised of professional EMTs, Paramedics, Nurses, and Physicians who donate their time and skills, RedSTAR supplies wilderness-capable medical providers to the exceptional Powell County Search and Rescue Team. RedSTAR is also available to adjoining counties when requested. Members are highly trained in wilderness Search and Rescue, as well as Technical Rope Rescue, and are trained to operate safely in wilderness settings to support SAR teams. RedSTAR provides medical support to search operations and to care for found subjects in austere environments. RedSTAR providers servce as experts in front country and back country medicine, and are “wilderness all-hazards” capable.RedSTAR serves as official Special Operations Unit of Powell County government under the auspices of Powell County Ambulance Service under medical director Walt Lubbers, MD, and utilizes progressive protocols, procedures, and rope rescue training to access and treat patients with advanced therapies.

Working full-time as a NCT, I provided exceptional quality-driven, customer-centered, service-focused, resource-wise, growth-oriented patient care in the ICU as part of the Tower 200, Trauma/Surgical Services 7th Floor ICU team. As a NCT and during my studies in undergrad, I took an interest and learned a great deal in Critical Care Monitoring including ECG, quantitative waveform capnometry, Swans-Gans Catheter maintenance, invasive arterial line/dynamic blood pressure monitoring, Level-1 fluid resuscitation/warmer, and Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy. I took great initiative to learn and perform advanced training and education of ICU Burn Patients, and took hospital provided advanced Training and Education in Orthopedic trauma patients even though they were not required of me. I served for many years and until my departure from UKY as a knowledgeable, competent Preceptor for NCTs in ICU unit orientation. My duties included structured patient daily ADL’s and care, according to ICU guidelines. I responded promptly to patient call lights, mindful of patient satisfaction. I became highly skilled and trained in phlebotomy, acquisition of lab specimens, and timely delivery of specimens. I maintained and set up critical care patient rooms – mindful of the type of patient and acuity we would be receiving, cleaned the rooms upon discharge, and transported patients to lower acuity within my scope of practice. I performed cleaning and maintenance on equipment, such as telemetry units, glucometers, checked off the unit code-carts, and intubation bags. I assisted R.N. with sterile procedures such as wound vac and aquarium dressing changes, restocked supplies, and charted all interventions and care in Sunrise Clinical Manager.

At Eastern State, a residential psychiatric treatment healthcare facility, I served as a Mental Health Associate Provider in the Intensive Services Unit for violent, severely and persistently mentally ill adult psychiatric patients in a lock down inpatient psychiatric hospital setting. I developed clinical skill sets and experience in individual, family, and group therapy, as well as served as a direct healthcare provider. I used verbal deescalation and interpersonal skills in the patient-care setting to defuse crisis situations, as well as hostage type situations that did arise. I maintained certification as a SRNA, in CPR, and Crisis-Prevention and Intervention. My ability to work well with hostile/violent patients, in a stressful and dangerous environment was a pertinent skill set. I gained firsthand experience in working with dangerous patients that could not be placed in the general patient population, and utilized my skills in a team-approach to the application of 6 point-restraints in crisis situations when warranted with psychiatric patients that were a harm to themselves or others. I was responsible for patient charting, and patient education on their conditions, illness, coping mechanisms, and therapy. I recieved consistent praise and accommodation from patients, management, and staff members, including the Rookie of The Year Award my first year at Eastern State, enterprise wide.
