About Jonathan Hedley
I am a Postdoctoral Research Fellow funded by Novo Nordisk. I’m working in the field of AI for Drug Discovery in the Torr Vision Group at the University of Oxford. My experience prior to this role was a PhD in Theoretical Chemical Physics at Imperial College London, funded by the President’s PhD Scholarship. My research was in developing a field theoretical theory of water correlations, accounting for nonlocal electrostatic polarisation correlations. This theory was then applied in multiple systems, from the more electrochemical (metal/solution interface) to biophysical (DNA interactions). I then held a brief postdoctoral position in Computational & Theoretical Biophysics at Imperial, developing a theory of DNA-DNA interactions, alongside all-atom Molecular Dynamics and monte carlo simulations, funded by the Leverhulme Trust.

Novo Nordisk Postdoctoral Research Fellow
CurrentNavigating the genetic perturbation landscape: Multi-modal, causal representation learning for target discovery.Novo Nordisk Postdoctoral Research Fellow, working in the Torr Vision Group at the Department of Engineering Science, University of Oxford. Building models to predict cellular responses to genetic perturbations.
Postdoctoral Researcher In Computational & Theoretical Biophysics
Three-month research position to investigate (i) ion adsorption to DNA molecules and (ii) effect of structured water on DNA cholesteric liquid crystal phases, through a combination of analytical theory, and molecular dynamics & Monte Carlo simulations.
Phd In Theoretical Chemical Physics
Thesis title: Nonlocal correlation effects in water and aqueous electrolytes at electrified interfaces.A theoretical investigation into the nonlocal molecular correlations of water, and how they influence phenomena throughout biology and electrochemistry. Supervised by Prof. Alexei Kornyshev. Funded by the Imperial President’s PhD Scholarship.
Turing Scheme Global Research Fellow
I was awarded a Global Research Fellowship by the Turing Scheme and Imperial College during my PhD to visit ESPCI, Paris as a research fellow, hosted by Dr Hélène Berthioumieux. I developed a theory to investigate the interplay between quantum and classical correlations influences ion physisorption at the electrode/electrolyte interface.
Research Assistant In Computational Chemical Physics
Under the supervision of Prof. Adam Willard, using rejection-free Kinetic Monte Carlo simulations to model exciton dynamics in disordered systems with spatially inhomogeneous decay rates.
Research Assistant In Experimental Electrochemistry
Under the supervision of Dr. Paul Wilde. Performing and developing instrumentation experiments to be used in teaching labs at Imperial College London. These include:- Building and using a galvanostat to synthesise Prussian Blue, and to explore its electrochemistry- Light Scattering from Gold Nanoparticles- Chronoamperometry of nanocrystalline metal oxide.
Research Assistant In Machine Learning (Nlp)
Worked under the supervision of Dr. João Malhado. Using machine learning techniques (natural language processing in python) to analyse student statements. Involves use of PDF text extraction techniques, tf-idf weighting, and language processing.
