Phd Candidate
Completing a PhD with publication titled "Navigating the Social and the Commercial: The Marketing of Fashion-Based Social Enterprise" involved an in-depth exploration of the unique challenges faced by fashion-based social enterprises (FSEs) in balancing their social missions with commercial imperatives. The research, grounded in semi-structured interviews with FSE leaders, focused on how these enterprises approach marketing, specifically the representation of beneficiaries, brand storytelling, and the integration of social impact into consumer-facing communications. The work adopted a critical cultural lens to analyze power dynamics and ethical considerations in marketing, employing Stuart Hall’s theory of representation. Throughout the PhD process, I was able to generate insights that contribute both academically and practically to the fields of fashion marketing and social enterprise, offering frameworks for ethical marketing that resonate with socially conscious consumers while maintaining commercial viability.
