About Jon Kindem
I am an applied physicist excited about building quantum technologies. I am currently a NRC postdoctoral scholar at JILA/CU-Boulder, where I am working on a microwave-to-optical converter to form a photonic quantum link between superconducting circuits. My PhD work at Caltech focused on building nanophotonic quantum light-matter interfaces based on rare-earth ions embedded in solids.
Listed skills include Physics, Leadership, Matlab, Data Analysis, and 1 others.

Quantum Engineer
Nrc Postdoctoral Fellow
Working in the labs of Prof. Konrad Lehnert and Prof. Cindy Regal on a microwave-to-optical converter based on a silicon nitride membrane simultaneously coupled to an optical cavity and microwave circuit. My goal of my work has been:- Improving the added noise and efficiency of the system to enable quantum transduction and entanglement between the microwave and optical domains- Integrating the converter with a superconducting qubit to demonstrate optical qubit readout and transduction of single photon states generated by the qubit. - Introducing single-photon detection techniques into the optical detection chain to allow for heralded generation of Fock states in the mechanical resonator and related probabilistic entanglement schemes.
Graduate Research Assistant
PhD research in the Nanoscale and Quantum Optics group with Prof. Andrei Faraon developing on-chip quantum light-matter interfaces based on nanophotonic resonators integrated with rare-earth ions embedded in solids. Highlights include:- A nanoscale quantum memory using an ensemble of neodymium ions coupled to a nanobeam cavity fabricated in the YVO host crystal. We showed high-fidelity storage at the single-photon level and a novel method for dynamically shaping the memory retrieval time based on the cavity-enhanced AC stark shift. - Detailed spectroscopy and characterization of a previously unexplored rare-earth ion/host crystal combination Yb:YVO- Spin initialization, coherent optical and spin manipulation, and high-fidelity single-shot readout of a single Yb ion embedded in a nanophotonic cavity. Achieved spin coherence times of 30 ms at temperatures greater than 1 kelvin and conditional readout fidelity greater than 95 percent. This was the first demonstration of its kind for rare-earth ions in solids. - A proof-of-principle microwave-to-optical transducer using Yb:YVOAs one of the first graduate students in the lab, I designed and constructed the experimental apparatus from the ground up. This included building free-space and fiber-based optical assemblies, developing experiment control code, and incorporating these systems for optical and microwave control into cryogenic environments such as 4K cryostats and dilution refrigerators.
Tutor And Grader For The Physics Department
Tutored groups of students in Freshmen and Sophomore-level physics at the Reed academic help center on a weekly basis and in a one-on-one setting by arrangement. Graded problem sets for the junior-level electrodynamics course, sophomore-level modern physics course, and the introductory general physics course.
Summer Research Intern
Worked with Dr. Justin Taraska in the Lab of Molecular and Cellular Imaging at the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute. Developed methods to quantitatively map the localization of proteins to endocytic and exocytic sites within cells using evanescent field microscopy and image analysis in MATLAB.
