Climate Responsiveness is a new type of work that leaders in Aotearoa need to add to their crowded job descriptions. My doctoral study will explore how to help leaders find and grow the muscles needed to lead effective organisational responses to climate change and biodiversity loss.My new work is providing this support to leaders and their businesses and includes the following:--Getting clear about what the problem is and what we need to do as business leaders-Getting smart about making enough money AND making things better-Getting brave about change so that our children have a habitable planet and a healthy ecosystem-Getting stuck in so that the ship turns now, not in another 30 years time.Connect with me if this is also your mahi to do.JL

Aug 2024 - Present

Director Of Maranga Ltd.

Maranga Ltd.

Nelson, Aotearoa

Maranga, meaning "arise" or "get up", is a training and development consultancy focussing on the human side of business. Developing leadership, improving teams effectiveness, and growing great culture are our stock in trade.

Facilitator

Aotearoa New Zealand

CQ teams are made up of professional people who meet three times a year to share skills, insight and inspiration. They also bring the wisdom of the group to bear on specific issues or challenges that individual members are facing in their work. Each team has a facilitator who is the guardian of the process. I love this model of professional development because I can see that it works, and I expect it to grow significantly over the coming years.

Training Manager

Anakiwa, Marlborough, New Zealand

Recruitment, Induction and Training of Outward Bound New Zealand Instructional Staff.Leading learning and professional development within our own team. Member of Anakiwa leadership team.Duty Manager.SupervisorThis is a very hands on role in that am involved in the careers of our instructors from before they apply for a position, through the selection and on boarding processes, and into their first year of employment. I then continue to be involved by planning and organising all the in house staff training, and overseeing our programme of on the job coaching for instructors.

May 2012 - Dec 2017

Outdoor Adventure Programme Manager

Kapiti

I took over the leadership of a small programme which had been running for a long time, but which needed some attention. I saw my job as bringing the programme into line with industry norms, and competing again with other established providers in this sector. In my three happy years at Whitireia our student numbers and our success and completion figures, all increased considerably, and we moved to a new, purpose built site on the Kapiti Coast. The programme has continued to thrive since I left and I have had the plaseure of employing graduates of the course in my work at Outward Bound.

2009 - 2012 ~3 yrs

Skipper/Husband/Dad

Yacht Vadis

Ocean Voyage Uk - New Zealand

Sailed 32' yacht from UK to NZ with Genevieve and Skye, because you can't preach about the value of adventure without having some of your own.We spent a year preparing ourselves and the boat for the journey, allowing our new baby to grow for 18 months and earning a bit more Sterling.Apart from having children, the most committing thing I have ever done. On the one hand it is easy...there are lots of people doing this sort of thing...but on the other hand, taking responsibility for yourself and your small family in the middle of the ocean in a very small boat, is a really big deal. It clarified for me the responsibility aspect of adventure.

Jul 2007 - Dec 2009

Trainer

Royal New Zealand Police College

Papakowhai, Wellington

I was part of a small team that delivered the experiential aspect (i.e. leadership, problem solving and decision making in action)of selection and promotion courses to different specialisms within the Police. Same work, different organisational structure and culture. A fascinating glimpse into the world of the NZ Police. A really different perspective on training and performance. I wouldn't have missed it for anything.

2008 - 2009 ~1 yr

Outward Bound Instructor

Anakiwa, Marlborough

What a period of growth and learning, professional and personal. Three years spent running long duration personal development programmes for individuals from all walks of life from unemployed to professional, and living in an environment focussed on being the best you can be. A great test bed for facilitation and coaching skills, as well as understanding my role in a medium sized business, which in turn is part of a worldwide network.

Feb 2002 - Jan 2005

Competetive Sailor, And Sailing Coach

Worldwide, But Based In Dublin.

Three years spent as a semi professional athlete and a part time coach at the elite end of the sailing world.I trained and competed all over the world hoping to represent Ireland in Sydney 2000. At my peak I reached the top ten in Europe and the top 16 in the world, but then my performance slumped and I did not manage to haul it back up quickly enough to be selected for the games. Great experience of self analysis, feedback, performance, goal setting, training, sheer hard work, and the two imposters of 'triumph and disaster' that Kipling talks about in If. I also had great insight into being coached and to coaching others over these years.
