About Jon M.

Note: I understand French (both written and spoken) and have worked in primarily French companies. I generally prefer to express myself in English but I have no problem if others are more comfortable expressing themselves in French.Prior to getting into game development, I worked for 2 years as an intellectual property lawyer (specializing in software patents). This background allowed me to hone my interpersonal skills and improve my research skills while learning about cutting edge technology.However, the law tends to evolve slowly. I craved the challenges and unpredictability of working in video games. The unexpected obstacles and constant evolution of games technology means that I am always being pushed to learn more and adapt to new situations. These challenges allow me to always stay invested in my work and excited for new challenges. I have been gaming nearly all my life and I am very passionate about working on games. Even if sometimes working in games means a lot of hard work and long hours, there is no replacement for passion. I am also passionate about coding and the strength of a well designed system. I am always developing new game ideas and trying to improve systems. For me, the love of seeing things that I built come alive is reward enough to keep me working.I have developed many features from the ground up. Some of these features include a dynamic mantle system which analyzed environments in real time, a system to import player settings from previous games, and mass crowd systems. I often worked closely with designers and other departments to develop solutions. A designer once told me: "you never bring me problems, you only bring me solutions". I have developed a few small solo projects over the years. Whenever I am developing something, I try to learn about as many different areas of game development as I can to gain a holistic view of the finished project. Beyond coding (gameplay, engine, tools, systems), I have a working knowledge of 2D and 3D art (textures, modeling, rigging, animation, VFX), sound design and systems, shaders, and asset pipelines.My top strengths include a very strong memory, a wide knowledge base, the ability to learn quickly, and a talent for easily adapting to new tasks or situation. I always focused more on getting a sense for a wide variety of topics rather than devoting myself to one limited skill set. As a result, I won't always know everything I need in an area off the top of my head but I will always know how to find the information I need quickly, no matter the task.
