I was hired as the first employee at Quip (acquired by Salesforce in 2016). From the beginning and continuing since, I have worked on the backend stack, database stack, security, and developer environment, with many miscellaneous projects along the way (e.g. writing a spreadsheet expression evaluation engine in javascript). Quip's backend stack is composed of Python3, MySQL, Redis, and AWS. For 2017-2018, I was the TL for the Infrastructure team, responsible for availability, latency, security, and our virtual private cloud product Quip VPC. In 2019, I took on the role of Area TL for a group which is responsible for enterprise sales, infrastructure (serving/database/cloud), and security.

Google News ('04-06), Google App Engine ('06-'12)[Google News] My first job was being part of the team which converted Google News from a mad-scientist's perl script that generated static html files, and into a reliable infrastructure running on Google tech with dynamic clustering, serving, search, workflow, and classification. One large project I worked on was algorithmically ranking news organizations. I continue to use Google News every day.[App Engine] I was a member of the founding four-person team of App Engine, which began as a 20% project and then became the first official project working on the Google Cloud Platform. From the start I worked on the backend stack (appserver, frontend, appmaster), and continued on that path, developing as a TL with increasing levels of responsibility, working with incredible people and tech, until the end of my time at Google. I have fond memories of debugging an appmaster2 bug on my last day of employment before and after my exit interview. Our initial ambition (as documented on the first Wiki page) was to develop the platform that would be used by the next Facebook (which we did). App Engine survived the many perils of Google projects, began running on its own datacenters, and is now a billion dollar business.
