Running a small company on behalf of an overseas company has been a great learning experience. It has given me first hand insight into functions other than R&D such as accounting, marketing, sales, procurement, web sites, facilities, health and safety, how to keep things going in a pandemic etc because mostly I've had to do them myself.Our main achievement is the development of the Aricode A-2120 continuous inket printer with an average team size of 3 over a four year period. I look back at my time with Domino with a great deal of satisfaction. Here are what I consider my greatest technological achievements:• Inventor of the iPulse drop generator, a reliable and robust device with high yield, which is the core technology of Domino’s AX Series range of continuous inkjet printers. This device increased printing speed by about 35%, and significantly increased yield in production.• Concept, design and specification of Domino’s system for printing. The design pulled together a number of techniques for increasing speed and quality.• Concept, design and specification of automated experimental apparatus to produce the control parameters for printing - a data set known as a raster. This apparatus allowed more rasters to be produced in my last six months at Domino than in the rest of its history.• Co-inventor of Domino's first smart ink - a time temperature indicating ink developed through involvement in the European sponsored Isapack consortium project.• Conceived the concept of the iTech module, a device aimed at allowing customers to change ink and filters in a simple and clean manner. • Performed the fundamental work that underpins the development of Domino’s continuous inkjet ink range, leading to the release of the best selling 295BK ink.• Designer of the Bitjet 212 drop generator - a design that tripled yields and has been in use since its introduction in late in the year 2000.• Inventor of the Bitjet ceramic charge electrode, another device that significantly improved manufacturability. Changes to the printhead design also significantly improved print quality.• Responsible for patents and patent litigation with over 20 patents as named inventor.

I worked in the Electrical and Electrionic Engineering department doing mainly semiconductor processing in clean rooms and spectroscopy on laser diodes.• Scientific research as part of the European funded NODELASE project on methods to produce improved laser diodes and non-destructive testing. Involved converting a tea room into a clean room facility, design and construction including authoring software of a non-destructive laser probing station and development of diagnostic tools including luminescence microscopy and low frequency noise measurement.• Scientific research into the design of novel Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Lasers (VCSELS) using distributed Bragg reflectors• Invented a novel method to prevent surface diffusion of p-type dopants in GaAs by doping a spin on oxide with sodium nitrate and then heating.• Devised the process route and fabricated the University’s first successful GaN based blue LED. It is believed this was the first GaN based blue LED made outside of Japan.
