LIBS is a type of atomic emission spectroscopy which uses a highly energetic laser pulse as the excitation source. The laser is focused to form a plasma, which atomizes and excites samples. In principle, LIBS can analyse any matter regardless of its physical state, be it solid, liquid or gas. I was the Senior Optical Engineer/Physicist within the Spacial Measurement Division of Renishaw Plc. My role was research and development into/of new range finder/3D laser scanner products. The position drew on my broad experience and practical ability in physics, electronics and mechanical engineering. I ran the York laser and optics laboratory and worked closely with electronics systems engineers to develop new and innovative products that relied upon the fundamental physics that has fascinated me throughout my career.
