I am a Technican at National Grid, recently promoted after 13 years experience working on overhead power lines. I started my career with a level 3 apprenticeship, on which I achieved a Merit overall for my NVQ in Electrical Engineering. As a Linesman I was involved in a wide variety of work on the Distribution Network, from simple shrouding of cables for safety, right through to building new high voltage overhead lines. I also conducted low voltage switching on a regular basis. I am an authorised HV overhead switcher. As part of my job, I regularly go on 'stand-by'. This involves being available to be called out at any time in order to restore power to properties that have had their electricity supply interrupted. In 2019, I took on a year-long secondment as a craft planner where I managed small projects including new connections (1-4 properties), service alterations, and disconnections.
