As Head of UK Tax, I am responsible for the tax affairs of the Airbus’ Commercial, Defence & Space and Helicopter divisions in the UK.In my time at Airbus I have developed and grown an integrated tax team, taking it from a limited scope isolated team within a shared services function to a UK wide recognised centre of excellence, being part of the global Airbus tax function.In my role reporting direct to the global Senior Vice President Tax & Customs I manage Airbus’ relationship with HMRC, ensuring compliance through accurate and timely tax filings, achieving and maintaining Low Risk ratings for the business.I interact with colleagues throughout the global Airbus business, including senior management, providing ad hoc advice and guidance on any matter or initiative that may have a UK tax consequence, in addition to considering overseas tax consequences for UK entities performing activities outside of the UK.Numerous achievements include contributing significantly to EBIT and cash flow by identifying the previously unrecognised real potential for Research & Development Expenditure Credits within the Defence & Space division, which contributed over £65m to EBIT, and generated over £50m of cash, in the first 5 years of claims.

Deloitte’s corporate tax service line, one of the largest in the South West, provides an extensive range of services to a broad spectrum of clients. I worked with large organisations, such as Jarden Corporation, Arla Foods, Gerber Emig, Mothercare, Monsoon and Global Radio, as well as smaller privately owned organisations. I also dealt with corporate financiers, lawyers and in-house merger and acquisition teams during the course of transactions, taking a commercial view on issues in time pressured and sensitive situations.

KPMG’s corporate tax service line, again one of the largest in the South West, is closely integrated with the wider advisory offerings of the firm, and enjoys a diverse range of clients. During my time at KPMG I maintained a client portfolio for which I was responsible for overseeing both tax advisory projects and tax compliance, whilst also introducing the broad range of KPMG’s services. A significant amount of my time was spent working alongside Transaction Services on due diligence and structuring projects.

During my initial period at Deloitte, I worked closely alongside both Corporate Finance and Private Client Services, with much of my work being in connection with the provision of advice to entrepreneurs. This involved detailed consideration of shareholder issues, in addition to the corporate tax aspects. My experiences included the provision of long-running advice to Debenhams in connection with senior managements’ equity and non-equity interests in connection with a major refinancing, an Initial Public Offering and subsequent realisations of value. I also advised other management teams on management buy-outs, on both private equity backed deals and 100% debt financed deals, disposals, mergers and acquisitions and refinancings.

I was part of the Tax Advisory Group, handling corporate tax advisory projects arising from the Bristol, Cheltenham and Bath client base, which consisted predominantly of owner-managed businesses and occasional smaller quoted companies.During my time with Grant Thornton my experiences included; advising upon MBO's, S.110 IA 1986 non-statutory demergers, statutory demergers, reorganisations and reconstructions, R&D tax credits, EIS, due diligence reports, property taxes, stamp duty schemes and general tax planning.

I was a member of the entrepreneurial services tax assurance practice, which provided assurance services to entrepreneurial companies, smaller plc's and inbound investors. My role involved management of a tax assurance client allocation, including monitoring of compliance deadlines and status, in respect of both tax return filing and HMRC queries. I provided day to day advice and ad hoc consultancy services that arose as a result of client relationship or HMRC queries.

I gained my first exposure to practical tax experience during my secondment to International Structuring. I became involved in both standard compliance work and the roll out and selling of tax products.I originally joined PwC as an auditor, with my audit experience giving me exposure to a wide range of clients. My experience included supervisory duties, managing and coaching junior team members and the setting and monitoring of budgets. I enjoyed significant liaison with senior client personnel and reported directly to the manager or partner.
