Jon is an internationally licensed IFMGA mountain guide, and is an active outdoor educator, mountain guide, nurse and paramedic. He teaches AIARE avalanche science, wilderness travel, mountaineering, and technical rescue. He has been teaching for WMA since the eighties. Jon co-founded and directed the University of Maine outdoor program for seventeen years. He owns Acadia Mountain Guides Climbing School and is active in Maine search and rescue. After 14 years of flying with Lifeflight of Maine, Jon now works as a registered nurse in the emergency department and as a paramedic in the remote town of Greenville ME where wilderness calls occur with some frequency. His first expedition was hiking the Long Trail with a fellow 8th grader in 1975. With a passion for rock, snow, and ice, Jon's accomplishments as a climber and guide include over 75 guided peaks above 17,000 feet as well as many first ascents worldwide. He served on the AMGA BOD and the technical committee as an instructor/examiner and was the primary creator of the now nationally recognized SPI certification. Most recently he co-founded the Professional Climbing Instructors Association. Formerly he worked as a seasonal climbing and backcountry ranger at Rocky Mountain National Park and has served as a search and rescue team member on Denali. Jon strives to synthesize good concepts, challenge common paradigms, and develop new ideas to raise guiding and wilderness education standards. In his free time Jon still enjoys getting on the rock, snow and ice and is now attempting become a sailor. Jon lives in Hampden, ME with his wife Heather, three cats and Stella, a pint sized shorkie who often assists in classes.
