Professor Jon Watson is a gastroenterologist in clinical practice at Epworth Hospital Geelong, and University Hospital Geelong, Australia. He has held leadership roles, and has practised, researched and taught in a number of Academic Health Centres in Australia over the last 25 years.He attended Cambridge University for his undergraduate degrees in Medicine, and Oxford University for his clinical studies (Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery). He trained as a physician in internal medicine and gastroenterology in Oxford, London and Newcastle upon Tyne, UK. Whilst working in Newcastle upon Tyne, he was awarded a PhD for studies into liver disease. He was awarded the European Certificate of Completion of Specialist Training (CCST) in 1998. He holds appointments as Clinical Professor, The University of Western Australia and Adjunct Professor, Deakin University.He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of London and a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians, and is a National Examiner of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians. He has served as a Board Director for Kardinia Health Geelong, the QEII Medical Centre Trust, WA, and the Postgraduate Medical Council of Victoria, and has served as Board Chair of the National Centre for Farmer Health in Hamilton, Victoria. Prof Watson offers a boutique consulting service in health organisation consulting and change management. He has a longstanding interest in leadership, and previously served as Dean of Medicine at Deakin University, Victoria, and Executive Dean of the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences at The University of Western Australia. Prof Watson has been formally trained in leadership and management (Cambridge University, University of Dundee). He has held multiple leadership roles, managing large budgets and complex organisations. He has taken organisations through times of conflict, growth and change. He has successfully balanced budgets and undertaken change management, restructuring, growth and career mentorship.And most importantly he remains active in clinical practice, mentoring, teaching, examining and academic research. In two of his most recent consulting roles he has been able to undertake ward service and attend clinical meetings at the health services in addition to the change management and leadership consulting. This provides a unique insight into pressure points within an organisation, and allows Prof Watson to engage directly with all stakeholders both formally and informally, to provide the best organisational solutions.
