A full-service digital agency, Connections Media offered strategy, design, digital marketing, and analytics services to leading foundations, industry associations, Fortune 500 companies, and select candidates for local, state, and federal office. With offices in Washington DC and New York City and a diverse and talented team, the agency was known for its creativity, innovation, longstanding loyal clients, and numerous industry awards - including multiple Webby’s.Connections Media was acquired in 2013 by the communications agency holding company Next15, and became part of its Outcast agency in 2019.

For a time I taught a graduate-level course on the role of the internet in politics at George Washington University Graduate School of Political Management (GSPM), and served as an advisor to faculty and students. I was also Chair of the Board at the Institute for Politics, Democracy & the Internet (IPDI), which hosted the original "Politics Online" Conference.

Mindshare Internet Campaigns, founded in 1997, was a first-of-its-kind strategy and technology consultancy offering Internet strategies for corporate, association, and non-profit clients. Mindshare was the vanguard of Web 1.0 public affairs agencies.In 2004, I sold my interest in Mindshare to my partners. The firm was later rebranded as Virilion, Inc and later became a part of RepEquity.

The Center for Democracy and Technology works to promote democratic values and constitutional liberties in the digital age. As one of the organization's group of 5 founders, my role was to establish and build the communications operation, including all digital and media relations. During this time, CDT gained national prominence shaping public policy for the early Internet. CDT created coalitions of industry and non-profit groups on privacy, security, and free expression. Among other accomplishments, CDT played a leading role in crafting Section 230, and then spearheaded a subsequent legal challenge to the Communications Decency Act, resulting in a unanimous Supreme Court decision establishing broad First Amendment protections for the Internet in 1997. As part of this effort I played a leading role in organizing many of the first online campaigns - including the first online petition, the 1996 Black Page Protest, and the first webcast of a Congressional Hearing.

While at EFF I worked on articulating the policy framework of the open internet, a foundational legal and public policy framework that defined the internet, and protecting data privacy and security from threats like the Clipper Chip. At that time, EFF also played a key role in the Communications Assistance for Law Enforcement Act (CALEA). This was a tumultuous chapter in EFF's history and a moment which lead to 5 of us leaving the organization in 1994 to form the Center for Democracy & Technology, and EFF relocating to San Fransisco.

An avid user of the early Internet (usenet, gopher, ftp and email beginning in the late 80's) I was lucky to land an Internship with Chairman Ed Markey (D-MA) and his staff on the House Subcommittee on Telecommunications and Finance. At the time, the Subcommittee was the nexus of what eventually became the 1996 Telecommunications Reform Act. It was clear these technologies were going to change just about everything, and I was thrilled to have an opportunity contribute to the early days of internet policy. In exchange, I learned how a bill really becomes a law, and made lifelong friendships.
