Jonalyn P. Mateo is a Bachelor of Science in Fisheries graduate of College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences, University of the Philippines –Visayas Miagao Campus (2010) and has a master’s degree in Fisheries Major in Fisheries Biology (2018) from the same campus. In January 2018, she was appointed as an early career researcher (ECR) on a major new 4 year international Programme Global SeaweedSTAR (www.globalseaweed.org) funded by the Research Council UK - Global Challenges Research Fund (RCUK-GCRF). The aim of this project is to safeguard the global seaweed industry and her role is a researcher in the area of biosecurity and farm management. At present, she is on a 6 month intensive training programme based in the UK organized by the Scottish Association for Marine Science (Programme Coordinator).Jonalyn started working at Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center Aquaculture Department (SEAFDEC AQD) in 2010. She has worked on several seaweed projects in collaboration with different international funding agencies: Government of Japan – Trust Fund (GOJ – TF), AQUAFISH Collaborative Research Support Program (CRSP), Australian Centre for Agricultural Research (ACIAR), United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and Zoological Society of London – Community-Philippines (ZSL). She has worked with local NGOs such as Cooperative for Assistance and Relief Everywhere (CARE), Taytay sa Kauswagan, Inc.(TSKI), PinoyME Foundation, Inc., Ayala Foundation, (Biotech) and government agencies Provincial Government of Palawan, Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR), DOST and some Local Government Units. Jonalyn has co-authored “Effect of short-term immersion of Kappaphycus alvarezii (Doty) Doty in high nitrogen on the growth, nitrogen assimilation, carrageenan quality, and occurrence of “ice-ice” disease in 2015 and “Clonal production of Kappaphycus alvarezii (Doty) Doty in vitro” in 2017. These articles were both published in Journal of Applied Phycology.
