My formal education is in electrical engineering, but I have also spent many years studying tissue optics and physiology. I have worked for over three decades in the field of medical electronics and clinical research. In my first job as an electrical engineer I was involved in the development of the first programmable implantable pacemaker. As Manager of Research and Senior Scientist at Datex-Ohmeda (now part of GE Healthcare), I conducted applied research and product development on photoplethysmographic methods for blood analyte monitoring, optical techniques for anesthetic agent monitoring, as well as researching and developing various measurement techniques for monitoring blood pressure, cardiac output, and other hemodynamic/pulmonary parameters. This work led to numerous commercial products in the field of pulse oximetry, a number of publications including peer-reviewed journal articles, book chapters, expert witness work, and more than a dozen key patents in medical monitoring. I co-founded, and am CEO of Kestrel Labs, a company developed to create the next generation in vital signs monitoring using advanced photoplethysmographic techniques that leverage new developments in the field of photonics. The team that we have built at Kestrel Labs represents many decades of combined experience in engineering and medical product development. We are also pleased to be joined by an outstanding group of medical advisors who help keep us grounded in the clinical side of our business.
