As Chief Data Scientist for the NCI Division of Cancer Epidemiology and Genetics (DCEG), Dr. Almeida has the dual responsibilities of 1) leading efforts for the integrated creation, management, and analysis of data-intensive knowledge bases, establishing cost-effective scalable researcher-facing analytic infrastructure, and defining new infrastructure to extract, manage, and analyze data in a scalable way to support epidemiological research within the Division; and 2) conducting independent research to advance real-time analytics of cancer “Big Data”. He provides support for the data and technology infrastructure used by the new prospective multi-center cohort study that will serve as an important Division-wide resource.

Biomedical Big Data resources such as The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA), as well as public health data such as data.healthcare.gov, use the Web into a global data space. New possibilities are now at hand to also explore it as a data-intensive global compute space that crisscrosses between high availability scalable cloud computing and consumer-facing, cross-platform web applications. Therefore, both my research and CTO work are focused on the CLOUD + APPs model. The challenge of deploying data assets and analytical services to the Cloud in a manner that enhances the accuracy of Computational Pathology (http://bit.ly/computationalPathology) and, more generically, Precision Medicine, drives most of what I do at Stony Brook as a Biomedical Data Scientist, from teaching graduate students to research and service to the Academic Medical Center.

originally recruited to the Applied Mathematics Department, structured in 2007 into several departments, assigned to Bioinformatics Department. Awarded adn endowed distinguished professorship in 2008. Throughout this period I led the Integrative Bioinformatics Laboratory (IBL) focused of research and graduate training in computational statistics and integrative bioinformatic infrastructure. Central topics were Machine learning and orchestration of Big Data resources using Semantic Web formalisms. The development of S3DB (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/s3db) took place during this tenure at M.D.Anderson.
