About Jonas Gomes Da Silva

My mission is to disseminate knowledge and build a positive legacy for humanity and the planet. With 27 years of experience as a researcher and 21 years in academia, I have developed a robust career in public, private, and third sector organisations, such as Gillette da Amazônia S.A., Fucapi, SECT-AM, FAPEAM, UEA, and UFAM, with expertise in total quality management, strategic planning, social innovation, and sustainability, focusing recently on Smart Cities and Net Zero initiatives. With the support of the Japanese Government, I obtained my PhD in Production Engineering from Gunma University in 2003, and during my academic career, I have dedicated 16,869 hours to preparing and mentoring students to become future leaders. Additionally, I have published 36 scientific articles and 436 articles in the Jornal do Comércio do Amazonas and the Estadão de São Paulo, as well as a book, demonstrating a solid commitment to research and knowledge dissemination. My social commitment is evidenced by 28 years of voluntary service in various organisations, including the Igreja de São Pedro Apóstolo, the Tokyo Meguro UNESCO Association, FIFA, and the Peace Boat; through the projects I implemented at the Instituto Alternativo de Petrópolis, we planted 1,000 trees and benefited 5,291 people, being recognised and financially supported by entities such as BrazilFoundation, Fundação Banco do Brasil, InterAmerican Foundation, JICA, and the US Embassy in Brazil. Recently, I conducted research at the University of Manchester on public policies for smart and sustainable cities in Europe, emphasising decarbonisation over time. Currently, I am an associate professor at the Federal University of Amazonas and serve as a reviewer for FAPEAM. I am a member of several prestigious organisations, including AMEOJAPÃO, the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), the Internet Society, Smart Cities World, Smart City Institute Japan, CoP I NetZeroCities' Community of Practice, and the World Economic Forum. I was invited to act as a "Nominator" for the Earthshot Prize, an initiative led by Prince William to support environmental innovations. I am a founding member; from 2008 to 2010, I served as President, leading the Association's activities in Manaus. Subsequently, I continued as a volunteer, assisting with organization and presentation of lectures, as well as supporting the activities of the Consulate General of Japan in Manaus. I collaborated with department heads to strategically schedule course offerings, provided guidance and mentorship to students, ensured compliance with norms and procedures, advised administrative bodies on course matters, coordinated student enrollment, and updated the pedagogical project, fostering active involvement from faculty and students.From 2015 to 2018, as vice chief of the Industrial Engineering Department, I developed and led the implementation of the Department's Strategic Plan, represented the department head, provided leadership, supervision, and support to faculty, students, and staff. I contributed to the annual activity report, submitting it for approval, and proposed personnel decisions, including hiring and dismissals, to the Department Council.In 2012, I was a member of the Commission responsible for establishing the Industrial Engineering Department. Between 2012 and 2014, I served on the Extension and Internationalization Committee of the Faculty of Technology at UFAM.On three occasions, I chaired the Electoral Commission overseeing elections for the positions of Coordinator and Vice Coordinator of the Industrial Engineering Course at the Faculty of Technology, UFAM.From 2004 to 2014, I developed and implemented a Strategic Plan and various projects for the non-governmental organization Alternativo de Petrópolis.

In partnership with the team & donors, designed, approved & implemented 4 projects in Manaus: 1) Education and Citizenship for the Community Service, approved in August 2006 by Brazilfoundation; Budget of R$ 12,500 to support the Pre-Entrance Exam, Cidade de Pedra Community Journal, and the implementation of the Petrópolis Socorro Chaves Community Library. By the end of 2007, more than 1200 residents had been served directly with this project; 2) Petrópolis Community Telecenter Dona Iracema da Silva, with support from Banco do Brasil in 2007. Afterwards, the project was supported by the Ministry of Communications through the Telecentros.BR Program, directly assisting more than 300 beneficiaries with a Basic computer course using Free Software; 3) Petrópolis Digital Entrepreneur Network, financially supported by Fundação Banco do Brasil, from October 2010 to April 2014, amounting to approximately R$91,100. The project qualified young and adults with courses related to Graphic Design, and Website Development, using Free Software(Gimp, Inkscape and Blender). Lectures on Software Livre and courses were also held at FUCAPI and UFAM universities, benefiting more than 200 in Manaus; 4) Education, Entrepreneurship and IT in Service to the Community, a project supported by the Inter-American Foundation, valued at approximately US$295,000. It was implemented between June 2010 and December 2012 and directly served hundreds of people living in Manaus city. The main actions of the project were: 4.1) Courses offered: English, Japanese, Spanish, Entrepreneurship, Development of Social Projects, Fundraising, Pre-Entrance Exam, Mini Entrance Exam, Brazilian Kitchen, Crafts with Egg Shell, Basic Computer course, Graphic Design, Website Development, etc. 4.2) Implementation of the Altpet FM Web Radio, with daily programs covering various topics; 4.3) Lectures on Environmental Education, distribution and planting of 750 trees; 4.4) Actions to encourage reading.
